"Evie?" Jacob asked in shock as he stepped off the elevator.

Evelyn stared at him for a moment before nodding at him. He was blocking the door and she wasn't able to jump on the elevator and run away from the unwelcome reunion.

"Oh my God Evie you're alive!" Jacob engulfed her in a hug as she struggled to find what to say to the man.

"Yes, I'm alive Jake. All thanks to the Avengers," Evelyn said as she allowed herself to hug him back.

"What do you mean thanks to the Avengers? Your house was burned down," Jacob said releasing her but not taking his eyes off of her. "Wait, you were the woman they rescued on their mission?"

"Yeah, I've been staying here to get recovered," Evelyn said looking into the green eyes she used to fall into years ago.

"If you'd be more comfortable staying with someone you know you can stay with me. I have an extra room," Jacob said as he put his hand on her shoulder.

Before Evelyn could answer the elevator door opened and Steve was stepping off on the floor. He looked between the two of them and squared his shoulders, "Everything okay Evelyn?"

Jacob released her shoulder and spun around saluting Steve, "Captain,"

Steve stood looking at the man sizing him up and trying to read the situation. Evelyn nodded at him and he then nodded to the man and extended his hand to him, "Steve Rogers"

"Jacob Martin, sir" Jacob said as he grasped his hand. "Thank you for rescuing Evelyn sir. I know her family would be eternally grateful to you. As am I."

Steve shook his hand even more confused by the young man's statement, "of course Jacob. She is an incredible young woman and has quickly become a member of our family."

Jacob looked between the two of them and Evelyn noticed the air around them changed and she felt the jealousy seeping through the air. Her head shot to Jacob and saw him looking at Steve almost sizing him up and had to repress a giggle.

"If you gentlemen will excuse me I need to go back to my floor to start baking," Evelyn said pushing the call button again.

Jacob grabbed her hand gently and squeezed it. "I'm so happy you're okay Eve. We will need to get caught up soon. There is a great coffee shop close to here we can go to."

"I'll see Jake - I have a lot of training scheduled," Evelyn said, giving him a gentle smile as the elevator door opened and she walked to it.

"Evelyn, I forgot something back in my room for my meeting with Fury. I'll ride back up with you," Steve said, getting on the elevator behind her subtly pushing the close door button.

Jacob's face was a combination of confusion and shock as the doors closed. Once the doors were shut Evelyn let out a giggle. Earning a small grin from Steve.

"Well - are you going to give me any information on that?" Steve asked, leaning against the wall.

Evelyn sighed and bit her lip. "Jacob was the Prom date from the story I told you. He was also my long distance fiance when he went into the military - until he ended it."

Steve looked at her a little shocked - she hadn't mentioned having a fiance before. "You have had a very adventurous couple weeks."

Evelyn put her face in her hands and groaned. "I just wanted to have a calm, easy day baking."

As they arrived on their floor Steve looked at Evelyn and put his arms out earning a smile from her as she hugged him. Steve rested his chin on the top of her head. "Listen, I have to go down to a meeting with Fury and Tony but later I'll be up and we can talk if you want."
