Chapter 43

"I don't deserve your forgiveness. I may not have known why they wanted information on girls with empath skills but I knew it wasn't for anything good. I should've asked more questions when I heard your family died in that fire. I swear Evie - I didn't know it was you and Grace getting tested on until I saw you at the Tower." Jacob said a tear going down his face.

"Come on Jacob. Let's get out of here. You will have to answer for what you've done but I think as long as you give them the information they need you can get through this." Evelyn said walking towards Bucky and the door.

Bucky watched in awe as Evelyn forgave Jacob and walked towards him. He knew Jacob had a long road ahead of him. He would likely spend a lot of time in S.H.I.E.L.Ds jail cells and being interrogated. He also knew Evelyn would make sure he was taken care of because of her heart. A part of Bucky was jealous of their bond. He was Evelyn's first love and he could tell she still cared for him. When Evelyn got to Bucky's side with Jacob he gave her a half smile. If she chose Jacob over him, he would step aside - it would kill him, but he would.

Evelyn grabbed Bucky's hand - the hand of the man who she wanted her future to be with. She saw a spark in his eye. "Let's go home, Sarge."

They went through the halls quietly with Jacob walking ahead with his gun trained looking around the corners. They quickly got out of the base and saw the quinjet waiting on them and Evelyn breathed a sigh of relief.

Steve stood on the ramp and had a questioning look as the three of them arrived and was even moved confused when approaching the ramp Jacob put his hands in the air surrendering himself.

"Jacob is going to turn himself in and will be giving information regarding Hydra's plans," Bucky said as Steve descended.

"How is she, Steve?" Evelyn said her heart in her throat

Steve took a deep breath, "When we left the building I think the additional serum took effect and she started to seize violently. Once she stopped she wasn't responding and she went with the rest of the team to get help. We split up to protect her." He knew he had to stay back in case Evelyn or Bucky needed him but his heart wanted to go with her.

"Take me to her now," Evelyn said going up the ramp with all men following her.

As the ramp began to close the jet rocked violently as they were shot stopping the ramp from closing. In the distance, Evelyn saw a figure reloading a rocket launcher from his shoulder and a chill took over her body. "Pierce"

"Cap - I can't get us in the air with rockets being shot at us," Natasha yelled from the front of the jet.

Bucky shouldered his gun and started firing as the figure aimed to shoot again. The force of the second missile hitting the jet sent Evelyn forward and he was too slow to grab her as she fell out. As the jet spun he was powerless to get to her as the figure started to advance.
