This story is based on the song Miss Independent by Kelly Clarkson. It's a good early 2000s hit. Lately for some reason, I've been feeling rather nostalgic and have been listening to a lot of her older songs.

---------------------------------

Hyunjin was always someone who would depend on no one but himself. He never wanted to feel like he needed anyone. He was perfectly capable of doing things on his own. He enjoyed the satisfaction of learning a new skill without a teacher. Of course, this led to a sense of loneliness and desperation that he didn't understand. He wasn't sure why, but out of the blue, he had the feeling of want, but he didn't know what it was that he wanted.

He would still get the dopamine high from new achievements, but they wouldn't ever last too long. After the initial joy and excitement, he would crash, and wander around aimlessly, looking for something else to try to make him fulfilled, but nothing ever worked.

He thought about the possibility of getting into a relationship, but the idea of it made him disgusted. If he did that, he would have to rely on that other person and vice versa. That was something he wasn't fond of. But everytime he would see couples walking down the streets or in a restaurant, he would always think 'why can't that be me?'

Not wanting to indulge those thoughts, he would quickly dismiss them and push them to the back of his mind. He didn't have the time for a relationship. At least, he didn't think he did.

Unfortunately for Hyunjin, recently, his mind had been fogged up with thoughts of Yang Jeongin, one of his co-workers. For some reason, he couldn't get the boy out of his head. It was like he was glued to his brain.

Everytime he would see Jeongin, he would get the same boost that he did with his achievements. But that boost would last much longer than they normally did. It would be intensified if they talked to each other, even just one word. If they had a full conversation, there was no chance of Hyunjin getting Jeongin out of his head for the next two weeks.

It started to freak Hyunjin out when he found himself thinking about Jeongin rather than his work or learning. He would be sitting at his desk, reading through an email, and suddenly zone out. When he would catch himself and come back to reality, it was only then that he realized that he was thinking about Jeongin.

Jeongin, on the other hand, had always taken a liking to Hyunjin. He found him intriguing and interesting. He admired the work that he would do for the business and how well mannered he was.

Jeongin wasn't as interested in the business as he made it seem like he was. The only reason he was really there was for his parents approval. But he started to enjoy showing up when he met Hyunjin.

He would never hint at liking Hyunjin since he didn't want to make things awkward at work if he were to be rejected. That possibility was extremely likely, seeing as Hyunjin would always reject anyone who came his way because he would be too busy working.

But Jeongin noticed Hyunjin loosening up recently. Or, more so slacking than anything. He wasn't sure why, but he was happy to see it. It made him more comfortable to see a more human-like side to Hyunjin than a robotic worker.

"Are you doing okay?" Jeongin asked Hyunjin while he was getting a cup of coffee.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Why are you asking?" Hyunjin replied, focusing on the drink filling the cup. He could feel the boost in his head, getting more joyful as they spoke.

"You just seem a little out of it is all. I just wanted to make sure everything was fine."

"Thank you for your concern. I'm honestly doing great, though," Hyunjin looked up and smiled. He wasn't lying. Because Jeongin had spoken up and showed genuine concern for him, Hyunjin felt his heart skip and his day was already a thousand times better than it was before.
