The Merchant of Venice play practice was starting and even though I was a substitute, I was expected to go. Just watch Leslie act and pick up the lines. Frankly, I think it was stupid because I doubt Leslie would just decide to miss it or fall sick.
I wasn't going to quit though, so I went to the theatre room after school. My shifts at Scream-in-beans, basketball practice and play practice were getting tight. I had to get my shifts at Scream-in-beans moved to accommodate everything I was doing. My mom and I had been having dinner every alternate day with Cole and Blake. It was weird at first but I had gotten used to it.
I walked into the theatre room and caught sight of River. Since he was a substitute like me, he too had to come to practice. He'd be the only company I'd have since everyone else would be acting.
"Hey River."
"Hey, Syd!" River said realising I had come. "This was going to be the most boring hour of my life, but you being here gives me hope that it won't," he continued.
"I didn't know you were into theatre," I told him.
"I didn't know you were either. I haven't acted professionally in a theatre or anything before, but I just knew I could act so I decided to try for the lead. I usually get the roles I try out for every year because I try out for the supporting roles. So I decided to aim for something higher this time. And this is where I landed," he said and sighed.
"Have the substitute actors ever got to act?" I asked him.
"Nope. We've never even had substitute actors in our grade because no one tries to compete with Leslie and Drake..."
