You were tired from your travels.
Having been on horseback since the early hours of the morning, your legs and back were getting sore, and your eyes heavy from the nonstop travel. The sun was beginning its descent and you decided you'd stop in the nearest town to find someplace to rest. Spotting one on the horizon, you spur your horse to move faster, and ride towards the sunset.

Arriving in the small town, you steer your horse to the local inn and tie it to a pole. Walking into the warm pub, you search in the dinner crowd for any sign of an employee. Heading up to the bar, you catch the attention of the tall blonde man behind the counter. You sit at one of the stools and he heads over to you, mug in hand.
"Haven't seen you before. Are you a traveller?" The man asks, raising his large eyebrows.
"Yeah I am." You answer. "Just passing through."
He nods and sets the mug down in front of you, filling it with ale. You thank him and take a few sips.
"Is there a spare room where I can stay the night?" You ask after a few minutes, finishing up your drink.
You see the look of pity in his eyes before he says anything, and you inwardly cringe.
"I'm so sorry, but we're full tonight" he says, looking at you in condolence. You sigh and let your forehead fall onto the bar top.
'Just great' you thought. Travel all day and there isn't even anywhere to spend the night. You feel your exhaustion hit you like a rock, and you almost feel like crying.
The bartender, feeling pity, puts a bowl full of stew in front of you. "Here. On the house." He says. Thanking him again, you begin to eat your supper.
'At least its free'
"If you're desperate, you could try the monastery" he says. "They're a little picky about guests, but I'm sure if you leave a few coins, they'll suck up to you."
Thinking about your options, you finish your supper.
'Either sleep outside on the grass, or MAYBE get to stay in a cold stone monastery. Great.'
Picking the best option, you throw a few coins on the counter for the ale, thank the bartender once again (who's name you learned was Erwin) and head out towards the monastery.
It had gotten dark by the time you had left the inn, and you had a hard time navigating the village to find the monastery. Dragging your horse through the maze of streets, you find the small stone chapel marking the entrance to the sanctuary. You drop the reigns of your horse and knock on the wooden door.
Eventually the door creaks open a little bit, and you see a robe clad acolyte peeking through the crack. You begin to practically beg for a place to stay, offering money or service or ANYTHING. You just wanted to sleep. Eventually, and with some reluctance, he lets you in and sends another acolyte to set your horse up in the stable.
Leading you towards a small room with beds, he lets you sleep in an empty one not occupied by a member of the monastery. You didn't know how you felt about sleeping with everyone else, but honestly, you were in no position to complain. Thanking him profusely, you drop your bag on the floor and throw yourself onto the cot, not even bothering with your shoes.

Despite your exhaustion, sleep did not come to you, and you tossed and turned for a few hours before deciding to get out bed. You knew you shouldn't over step the boundaries of your stay, but you were restless and needed to walk around a bit. Grabbing one of the low burning candles, you sneak around the sleeping acolytes and venture into the dark corridors of the monastery.
