You gazed out the window; watching as the setting sun turned the surrounding clouds pink and gold. The mountains were slowly growing larger in front of you, their shadows casting your destination in darkness.

'I hope we get there before it gets too dark' you thought to yourself, shifting your attention back to the multicoloured clouds. Your girlfriend Annie was silent beside you, hands on the wheel and head slighly tilted. You shifted a little to look at her, and watch as the setting sun turned her hair the most beautiful shade of gold you've ever seen. Annie was short and her head didn't quite meet the seat's headrest. You chucled every time you thought about it. You stifled a smile as you thought about her height; she was a little self concious of it, but you always made sure she knew how much you loved it; how much you loved her. 

Annie could see you staring at her out of the corner of her eye, and she removed one hand from the steering wheel to grab on to yours. You very quickly covered your clasped hands with your other one, and started stroking Annie's knuckles with your thumb. You were tranfixed by the way the pink and orange light shone on Annie's face, lighting up her pale grey eyes. You couldn't decide between gazing at the sunset or at her. 

The two of you drove in silence for a little while longer, until Annie suddenly slowed the car down and pulled onto the shoulder. 

"Annie is everything okay?" you asked, confused as to why she pulled over and stopped the car.

"I don't know, I just thought we could watch the sun set" she shrugged, looking a little bit embarassed: a light tinge of pink on her cheeks. She slid from the drivers side and you quickly scambeled out after her. She climbed onto the hood and sat on the roof of the car  and held out her hand to help you up. 

After only minimal struggle you were comfortable seated beside your girlfriend. Without the car roof blocking your view you were able to see the whole sunset as its vivd coloures stretched across the sky; bright pinks, oranges, and purples in an explosion of colour across the fading blue sky. 

You and Annie sat in silence, enjoying the view and each other's comany. At some point, Annie rested her head on your shoulder; something she usually didn't do often as far as affection went. You could feel her soft blonde hair as it ticked your cheek, and you rested your cheek on her head and entwined your fingers together.

"Y/n" Annie's voice came out as a whisper, so soft you barely heard it. 

"mhm" you hummed, leaning your face further into her hair. 

"If I asked you to run away with me, would you say yes?" she said, quietly, not even lifting her head to look at you. You thought for a second, and then actually thought about running away with her; what your lives would look like if you both dropped everything and ran. 

After a few moments you said: "yeah, I would". 

Silence ensued, but it was comfortable. Annie stroked your knucles with her thumb, and you snugled in closer to her so that in the approaching darkness no one would be able to tell where one of you finished and the other one started. 

It was only when the sun had fully dipped below the horizon that the two of you clambered down off the roof of the car and continued to your destination. But his time, as Annie pulled back onto the road and started driving, you felt the difference between the two of you; a a new profound tranquility about your futures. Maybe this was the moment that the two of you would never turn around and go back to your normal lives; the moment that you two would seek a new future on horizons you've never imagined.

Whatever the future held, you now felt like you were ready for it all; knowing that Annie would always be by your side and you always by her's. You looked over at her only to see that she was already looking at you. 

"Eyes on the road dummy" you said, a smile on your face that came without notice. She rolled her eyes, but started smiling as she looked back towards the darkening road in front of you. As the scenery sped by outside the vehicle, the two of you smiled those secret smiles reserved only for each other as you headed towards your futures.
