While the others were running and screaming for their lives, Ariana stayed closed to the walls. Being blind made the situation even more terrifying, if that was even possible. Though she wondered how much of an advantage the others actually had. She had heard that the maze itself was dark, and in all likelihood the others probably couldn't see there way around either.
Her heart began to race, as she could hear the beast roar in the distance. As frightened as she felt on the boat ride to Crete, it was nothing compared to how terrified she felt now. The others were crying, and begging for their lives, as she could hear the Minotaur killing his hapless victims. Ariana knew it was inevitable, the monster would soon come to claim her life as well. What were their crimes? Why had they been chosen to die? Their only crimes were being between the ages of fourteen to eighteen, and a citizen of Athens. Fourteen youths, seven young men and seven maidens had to die because of the tribulation that occurs every seven years.
Ariana moved her hands across the walls, as she did her best to maneuver the infinite death trap. The stone walls themselves were cold and damp, while the thick humid air gave off a most putrid odor. The foul odor was full of nothing but rotting corpses, and rancid mold. It was the smell of death itself, and was a reminder of the horrific fate that awaited her.
However, her blindness gave her an advantage that the others did not have. Unlike the others, Ariana had heightened senses that compensated for her lack of sight. Perhaps her heightened sense of smell could help her to navigate the maze, and even escape. It was a long shot, but it was better than waiting for death to take her.
As she continued along the way, she tried to be as stealth as possible. The others were frantic, and running for their lives. But she did her best to stay calm. For it was not only the beast that she had to fear, but the many traps along the way.
Ariana tried to get the others to stay with her, so that they could escape their dreaded fate. But they were too afraid to listen to her, to listen to reason. And in a situation like this, they were not going to put their lives in the hands of a girl—especially a blind one.
"Out of my way!" A young man had cried. Before Ariana even realized what was happening, she had suddenly been pushed—causing her to fall. Stunned by what had happened, she waited for a second before trying to push herself up off the ground. She winced in pain, as she forced herself to get up as quickly as she could.
Perhaps she should have been angry at the young man, for being so callous towards her. In a normal situation she likely would be, but in a normal situation the boy probably wouldn't have acted so barbaric. So Ariana could not blame him. One would tend to act barbaric running for their lives—running from the dreaded Minotaur.
The Minotaur was a creature that should never have been. It's mother—the queen of Crete herself, and it's father—a magical bull that had been given to King Minos by Poseidon. But when Minos failed to sacrifice the bull, Poseidon cast a spell on the queen—causing her to desire the creature. And in doing so—she mated with it, and bore the monster. It was that very monster, that had Ariana and the others running for their lives.
