Louis is slumped against the wall next to the elevator, hugging his legs to his chest and lying his head on his knees. His shoulders are shaking uncontrollably by the time Eloise gets there, sliding down to embrace him. He attempts to scoot away, covering his face with his palms, but she only holds him closer.

“I-I thought t-that,” Louis chokes out, but is unable to get out even a simple sentence and ends up bursting into sobs all over again.

Eloise just shakes her head and rubs his back soothingly. Harry and Jo are still back in the hotel room, doing only God knows what.

“What an asshole,” Louis hiccups, wiping his eyes and taking a deep breath.

“C’mon,” Eloise says, standing and helping him up. “Let’s go to the bakery. Maybe a hot chocolate and some cookies can cheer you up a bit.”

“Doubtful.”

They get into the elevator. Louis taps on his phone for a few minutes, putting his headphones into his ears as they enter the lobby. The two walk in an awkward silence for a few blocks, neither knowing quite what to say.

“What were you doing just then?” Eloise asks quietly as they near the bakery.

“Deleting his contact,” Louis says bitterly, and she knows who he’s talking about without him having to say it.

“Louis, listen-“

“Don’t try to defend him, alright? There’s nothing you can say that will excuse the fact that he was kissing someone else. And to top it off, it was a girl.” Louis chuckles dryly. “And, you know, I thought that this would work out. I actually did. I thought that maybe Harry and I could last, and I thought that I wouldn’t get hurt like I have been so many damn times. I told myself not to get too attached and I didn’t listen! God, I hate myself.”

He is almost to the brink of tears once more as he yells angrily, kicking at loose pieces of gravel. He feels stupid, so ignorant, but mostly hurt. He placed his heart on a silver platter and handed it to yet another self-centered and idiotic boy who tore it to shreds. When is Louis going to learn?

“No, Louis! Harry is a moron at times, okay, but when you two were together it was like he was walking on air. If anything, he fell head over heels for you. He’s just a bit hurt at the moment and confused and absolutely terrified of what it could mean if he did love you.”

They stop outside of the pastry shop and stand there, staring at it.

“Shall we go inside? I’m curious as to where you disappeared to, and I’m sure that you want to know what’s going on with my idiot of a friend,” Eloise says, opening the door to be hit with a warm gust of sweet smelling wind.

Things are rather busy today in the bakery. On top of the continuous stream of customers, Kat has screwed up four orders and Niall has burned a batch of cupcakes, all within the time frame of Eloise and Louis arriving. It's high time they hired a few more employees.
