Steve had asked me and Sam to come with him to Peggy's funeral, wanting company. And of course, I said yes, I want to be there for him.
I sat down on a bench and Steve had gone to the back. The choir sings a lovely melody and outcomes men holding a casket, Steve being one of them. A tear had rolled down my cheek while I watch them walk by, holding the casket on their shoulders.
Steve sat down next to me once he put the casket down, Sam was on the opposite side of me. Steve looked down and I put my hand on his, showing comfort.
"And now, I would like to invite Sharon Carter to come up and say a few words." The priest announced. I looked at Steve and nudged him slightly to get his attention.
Sharon comes walking up to a podium "Margaret Carter was known to most as a founder of SHIELD… but I just knew her as Aunt Peggy." Sharon spoke, looking at Steve. "She had a photograph in her office. Aunt Peggy standing next to JFK." Sharon nods her head smiling at the memories and continues "As a kid, that was pretty cool. But it was a lot to live up to. Which is why I never told anyone we were related." Steve looked back down at his hands and when Sharon started again he looked back up.
"I asked her once how she managed to master diplomacy and espionage in a time when no one wanted to see a woman succeed at either. She said compromise where you can. But where you can't, don't. Even if everyone is telling you that something wrong is something right. Even if the whole world is telling you to move… it is your duty to plant yourself like a tree… look them in the eye and say 'No, you move.' " Sharon finished her speech and everyone clapped and started to exit the church.
I stay sitting with Steve until everyone has left, including Sam. He stood up and I heard quiet footsteps, I looked behind and saw Nat walking towards us. Steve looks behind once he realizes someone had walked in. Steve leaned on the bench I was sat in and Nat stood across from him. I stood up slowly and stood beside Steve.
"When I came out of the ice, I thought everyone I had known was gone. Then I found out she was alive. I was just lucky to have her." Steve broke the silence.
"She had you back, too" I replied. Steve looked at me and nodded his head slightly.
"Who else signed?" Steve asked Natasha.
Nat's facial expressions went sad "Tony, Rhodey, Vision."
"And Clint?" I asked, afraid for the answer.
"Says he's retired," Nat replies.
"Wanda?" Steve asks. I know the answer to that, she would never sign it.
"TBD" Natasha answers
"Ya, like she would sign it." I sarcastically said. Nat shows me a small smile.
"I'm off to Vienna for the signing of the Accords. There's plenty of room on the jet." Natasha invited, looking at Steve then at me, then back at Steve. He just sighed and looked at his feet.
"Just because it's the path of least resistance doesn't mean it's the wrong path," Nat told Steve. Steve looked back at Nat and she continued to talk "Staying together is more important than how we stay together." Nat nods.
"What're we giving up to do it?" Steve asks, to which Nat looks down and sighs before looking back up. Steve shakes his head "I'm sorry, Nat. I can't sign it." Steve apologizes. "Ya, I agree with Steve here, I'm sorry," I add.
