Eavesdropping

The dream was vivid. I was dragged from total darkness to a tower that stretched upwards for what seemed like forever.

The fog carried me to the top of it, and then through the solid stone wall. My body didn't put up any resistance to the hard stone, like I was just a ghost, or wind blowing through cracks.

Inside was a room, a study. The walls were lined with fully-loaded bookshelves that moved on their own, vertically, through the ceiling and floor. Up and down they glided like an operator-less elevator that never stopped to rest.

In the center of the shelves was an archway, a door to an unknown place. Staring at the archway nestled between the bookshelves, I had a brief, but strong sense of déjà vu which pricked my curiosity.

Have I been here before?

The fog guided my head so that my gaze fell upon a man in the middle of the room, middle-aged with a full beard and a great hairline. He was reclining in a chair, staring out a window into the dark abyss with a bored and gloomy expression on his face.

His right hand was outstretched, and hovering there above his palm was a strange object. It seemed to be made of layers of golden metal that wrapped around itself in the shape of an eye, and with a bright light shining from the center diamond-shaped piece, which looked like a pupil.

What is that thing?

The dream vision was suddenly aborted as the mask I fell asleep wearing snapped back onto my face. I bolted upright, startled. Someone giggled.

"Ow! What's? Oh, Susie.. You scared the shit out of me."

I didn't have any hard-feelings for her, even after what she did, because well, I just liked her. She was care-free, always finding a reason to laugh, and that was something to be appreciated in a place like this. I was just happy she was interacting with me after I upset her earlier.

"Oh! Check out the mask I made!" I slid the creation off my face and offered it up for her inspection.

She held it in her hands, turning it over and upside-down as she studied it.

"What do you think?" I asked, standing up out of bed.

"Hmm.." Susie looked at the mask like she was analyzing an abstract work of art. "Well, it's cool.. but missing something.."

She walked over and set the mask down on the writing desk, exchanging it for the knife I used to carve with. Susie gripped the sharp steel in her left hand and squeezed till her knuckles turned white. She then swiftly yanked the blade out of her own grip.

"Jesus!" I exclaimed as the knife tore open her palm.

Blood quickly began spilling from her hand, and she let it carefully drip onto the mask. When she picked it up off the table, the blood streaked down, causing an effect that made the many eyes decorating the mask appear to cry crimson tears.

She handed the mask back to me.

"There." She said. "Now it's perfect."

Susie wrapped her hand in some bandages that Frank had stored in one of the desk cabinets and then walked to the door.

"C'mon!" She said with a hushed voice. "Let's do some eavesdropping!"

She motioned for me to follow her. I set the mask back down on the desk to dry and fell in line with her.

Susie stopped me at the doorframe and made me get on the ground to crawl across the floor. As we got closer to the edge of the loft, I started to make out Julies' voice coming from the lower level of the building.
