Two more clouds of fog summoned strangers to the campfire, still, David's face was what I focused on.
I was confused and angry, which invited my other emotions; fear, anxiety, dread, frustration. All of them joined my anger in focusing on David's brutish face. I imagined him shrinking.
And then my outburst.
"You left me to die on that hook! And now, I'm dead!-uh.." I paused, calculating the factuality of what I just said.
Someone behind David made an amused noise by exhaling through their nose. I felt like I was on the spot again.
David spoke, irritated.
"Aww, you died on a hook?"
He's mocking me.
"And you didn't even do it right. Ya know, you left yourself wide open!""He probably learned it from Ace's mother." A voice chimed in. She sounded fun and carefree, I envied that.
She laughed loudly behind David while another voice made a little offended grunt. I let my death stare on David go in order to examine the others.
The woman with dark hair, sunglasses and very well-fitting jeans, still trying not to giggle. The other person was the guy I woke up earlier. Ace. I wondered when any of this will make sense.
"Listen dude," David's condescending voice reminds me to resume my death stare.
"The trial will start soon. We repair five generators, five. That powers the gates, and then we open them and leave. IF! You get hooked, just stay calm. One of us will rescue you." He gestures to himself and the two behind him.
David looked at me expectantly. So I gave him a response.
"All I heard was, blah blah daddy didn't love me blah."He looks at me like I'm a total idiot, and I feel like one. Why am I being so impossible again?
The dark-haired woman chimed in while Ace tried to hide his amusement.
"You're a terrible baby-sitter, King.." She sighs, "Oh well, to hell with it. I'm bringing my key."
And then the fog took us.
