Days went by with no contact from The Entity. Not in my dreams, or during my long walks back from the trials. On the upside, slaying survivors was getting easier. The downside, Frank was getting restless waiting.
He was always there when I woke up, and always waiting for me to return from my matches. What's worse is that he began attacking me in order to knock me unconscious, like putting me to sleep was equivalent to picking up the phone and calling The Entity. He had gotten the others involved as well.
Knocking me out became the house game. They even created a way to score themselves based on effectiveness, stealth, and creativity.
Joey was currently in the lead after striking me from behind with a plugged-in electric guitar, recording the sound it made cracking my skull, and then dubbing it my official theme song.
I desperately wanted a vision to come after losing count of concussions, but it did not.
It had been a solid two weeks after my last run-in with The Entity when I finally met someone who had answers. Her name was Elodie, and she was a survivor.
When I saw her in the Fractured Cowshed, I recognized her immediately from Franks' sketch, he was quite good at profiles. I purposely avoided her all match, and was able to sacrifice her three teammates so we could be alone.
I stood on the open hatch, waiting for her to come to me.
"I just wanna talk!" I yelled out across the farm.
Soon after, she crossed the threshold of the corn-stalks, cautiously eyeballing me.
"It's Elodie, yeah?" I asked. "My name is Sarek. Frank says you know more about this place than anyone, is that right?"
This intrigued Elodie, she looked quite proud of herself. Of course she knew I had switched from survivor to killer somehow, which was baffling on its own accord, but she didn't know about my recent contact with The Entity.
"So you're him?" She spoke with a heavy French accent. "The most interesting and useless person here?"
Ok.. uncalled for.
Elodie folded her arms and closed the distance between us.
"Do you have anything helpful to report yet?" She asked bitterly.
I guess she wasn't happy with the information, or lack thereof, I had given to Feng.
"Well I think The Entity made contact with me, but I don't know what it wants." I said, cutting to the chase.
"What she wants." Elodie corrected.
"Wha- how could you possibly know? Uh forget it. Yes. What she wants."
I told her everything I knew about the crazy monster that trapped us here, the tower I saw in my dream, as well as the man and his strange artifact, which she made me describe in detail several times.
"The artifact, I've heard rumors of its' existence in old manuscripts. It has the power to make whoever wields it completely undetectable to The Entity, and it may do more than that."
She pulled a strand of her dark curly hair down and let it bounce back up.
"As for what The Entity wants from you, I mean it seems very simple. She wants you to steal it."
My eyes grew wide, although my mask protected my expression from being noticed.
"The man is a mystery to me." She continued. "Based on what you've described, it's not ringing any bells. The same goes for the tower where he resides." She shrugged.
"Wow, ok. So stealing the artifact? Are you sure?" I asked, hoping for a no.
Elodie chuckled, "Oh, I'm sure. The Entity is a control freak. She has somehow been made aware of that mans' presence here, and does not appreciate his little hide-and-seek game. And it makes sense why she switched your role from survivor to killer. She did you a favor, now you owe her one."
I walked sullenly back to Ormond after giving Elodie the hatch, my head bursting at the seams with troubling thoughts.
How am I supposed to find this tower? Why me anyways? What will happen if I don't deliver?
Walking up to the stone wall that held the Ormond Resort in its' borders, I was too inside my head to notice Susie standing on top of the stones, ready to strike.
Something cold and hard collided with my face, and then broke into pieces on the ground in front of me.
A snowball? Nope. That's definitely ice.
"Ah, man! Thought that would knock you out cold! Get it!? Cold!?" Susie hollered from the top of the wall.
She was wearing a baseball glove and a ball cap with two thick lines of black makeup under each eye.
"Cut it out! Fuck, I'm bleeding!" I yelled up at her, but she was already winding up to throw another pitch.
I had to run with my arms protecting my head to the secret entrance around the wall. Susie only hit me once more, luckily not in the head this time.
When I made my way inside the main building of the resort, I found Julie and Frank talking on a large sofa in the common area. Julie rolled her eyes at me as Frank perked up with hesitant optimism.
"Ok! Before anyone else tries to K.O. me, I have some good news!" I told them, wiping blood from my forehead.
Frank's face brightened a little, Julie just stared.
"Tell me you saw The Entity again!" Frank shouted. He rose up off the couch as I walked towards the two friends.
"Well, no. But I did talk to Elodie, and.." I trailed off for the sake of anticipation, however, Susie barged in, stealing the buildup I was creating.
"Do I still get points for my outfit if I didn't knock him out? It took forever to find this glove, and this hat smells like mildew and taint!" She said to the room, tossing the glove and cap to the floor.
Joey appeared from a room downstairs in time to answer her question.
"Nuh uh, no way! I didn't get jack when I dressed up as Tarzan and swung from that rope!"
Susie glared at Joey, Frank laughed, and Julie spoke up.
"You weren't dressed like Tarzan, Joey. You were just naked."
Joey's frustration was visible, this argument had been made several times already.
"Tarzan lives in the jungle! If you think he's not letting it flap around all day, you're crazy!" He said.
"Yeah, besides dude." Frank chimed in. "Sarek dodged that attack, and all you managed to do was make another hole in the wall."
"Yeah, classic Tarzan shit.." Joey trailed off.
"Susie doesn't get points, she didn't knock him out." Frank gave his verdict.
Susie sighed.
"Cool, can we get back to me?" I asked, but didn't wait for an answer. You really just had to force your way into conversations with these guys.
"I talked to Elodie. She knew what the artifact was, and thinks The Entity wants me to steal it.. So there's that." I said flatly.
Glances were exchanged. Frank stepped forward to address us.
"Anyone up for a heist!?"
The group all shared the same glimmer in their eyes, like they were recalling a happy Christmas memory.
Frank stuck his hand out in front of him, signalling for a huddle. We gathered around and all put our hands in. On the count of three our collective voices echoed through the resort.
"High jinks!"
