I knew he wasn't joking by the dark authority in his voice... and by the way he brandished his knife at me. Up close you could see the blood dripping off the hunting weapon.
"C'mon!" His mask slightly muffled his shout. Now he just sounded like a mugger.
"Ok! Ok.." the first one loud and startled, the second quiet and unsure.
I looked down at David and remembered where I left the sutures. My right hand found my aching bicep and touched the tender tissue where the needle-pointed thread was still dangling.
"Uh-ohh," the killer teased. He twirled his knife around in his fingers like a drummer twirling his sticks. "I can get that out for you.." he offered in a hushed voice.
Locking my gaze on the dark eyeholes of his mask, I pinched the thread, and yanked it out of my arm.
"Fuck! Mmmgaawd!" I hissed, taking a sharp inward breath.
I knelt/collapsed next to David, and held my hands out over his body. His shirt was torn badly in the attack, leaving his wounds exposed.
My hands hovered over a long, thin laceration running down his upper back. The masked man raised the foot he had resting on David to give me more space to work.
I inserted the needle-point thread, starting at the top. It went in smoothly. I pulled some slack through, as carefully as I could with shaking hands. I went for my next stitch, inserted the needle-tip and-
"FASTER!!" The masked man shouted, suddenly dropping down, eye-level with me.
I hate jump-scares. Everything in my body jerked in terror, and the sutures tore at the edge of Davids' wound. The pain stirred his consciousness, he groaned. "EeeEEEe!"
"THAT'S not how you do it!" The killer exclaimed, arms extended outwards. He reached down and grabbed the suture from David's back, held it high. "You see!? Like this!"
He came down hard on the wounded man and the victim let out a chilling howl. Blood splattered and began dripping down my lips and forehead.
David was panting, he choked out, "What are you DOOing!?" I wasn't sure which one of us he was asking, but the masked man replied.
"It was your idea, David." he ripped the sutures the rest of the way out, "We're learning the hard way today!"
David screamed a furious slur of sounds, and the masked man laughed as he tossed me the sutures.
"Start over." He commanded.
