Victors' Shriek

When my eyes opened, a field of dead grass and dark, low-rolling fog expanded in all directions. I shivered, rubbing my neck, still sore from..

That's right, I died again.

I walked through the field aimlessly, thankful to be alone. Quite some time went by before a rustle made my ears perk up.

Something fell through the black mist towards me, bouncing off the ground and coming to a rolling stop a few feet away.

A dirty old tennis ball?

I wondered if I should pick it up as a terrible shriek pierced the air. I thought my eardrums might explode as something collided with my body, and held on tight. I fell backwards, my elbow jamming into my side as I hit the ground, making me work to catch my breath.

I saw what looked like Dobby the House Elf, but with human ears.. had he fallen into a pit of acid.

It's lips were pulled way back, exposing a gnarly set of razor-edge teeth. The gremlin sat on my chest, studying me carefully with its' eyes, including the third one on it's right temple.

The little demon put it's horrible face close to mine, sniffing. Its hands felt around my neck, then began touching my earlobes..

"Uhh, can I help you?" I asked the gremlin as he searched my pockets, grunting like Gollum looking for his 'precious'. It pulled a round object from my pocket.

"My pin? No way!"

I reached for it but the gremlin slapped my hand. It began to scurry away, and I got up to follow, tired of being robbed.

"Who's over there!?" A voice called. "Danny? If you're creeping on me again, I swear-"

The dark-haired woman with sharp features stopped as she came near enough to see me through the swirling fog. She studied me, watching my eyes.

Coming into view behind her, a larger woman with a gaping hole in the side of her chest, big enough to crawl into.

"Who are you?" The dark haired woman asks.

The gremlin hurried to crawl up the woman who wore tattered clothing from an old, forgotten century. The little monster rested in the empty cavity on her side. It delivered my pin to her and then looked back at me. The woman examined both sides of the pin before holding it up for her company to see.

"Le masque de légion." She's said, surprise in her deep voice.

"Oh. My god, Charlotte." She smiled at her partner who was now tucking my pin into one of the pouches that hung from her waist.

"I think we just found Franks' missing fuck-boy. Good job, Victor!"

She reached out a hand to pet the gremlin, but is held back at arms' length by Charlotte, his protective host. She backed off with a huff, upset she didn't get to finish her praises. Victor curled up in Charlottes' cavity like a spoiled cat.

Definitely killers, right?

"I'm sorry, but am I in a trial right now? What's going on?" I asked, finally finding my voice.

They all three look up at me.

"Prenons ses chaussures." Charlotte said, glancing down to my feet.

"Not appropriate, Charlotte." The dark haired one replied, before addressing me.

"You don't know where you are?" She asked.

The blank look on my face must've been a good enough answer.

"Wow, ok then.." she continued, widening her eyes. "I know someone who's been looking for you."

"What? Who? I-"

"Where have you been all this time anyways?" She inquired as she began to approach me.

"All this time?" My face scrunched up as I tried to understand.

The dark haired woman was now close enough that she extended her hand out for a shake. Her tongue wetting the corner of her mouth before speaking again.

"Nobody's seen you in weeks, lost boy. I'm Amanda."

I shook her hand.

"We all thought Frank got you sent to the void." She jerked her head to the left. "We should go see him."

I remembered the promise I made with Frank during the last trial. That I wouldn't expect mercy from him, and he wouldn't show any. The hesitation shined through my eyes.

Amandas' grip on my hand tightened.

"Oh, you're definitely going. I've had enough of Franks' sad-boy bullshit." She said while pulling me along. "Uhh, he's so gloomy.."

"Charlotte," Amanda called, "wanna go see Joey?"

Charlottes' face lit up as she made an agreeable grunt, a smile accenting her plump cheeks. She looked down at Victor in her side, and playfully tickled him with her finger.
