It was finally over.
The trial had completely drained me, but the stress nearly all faded as soon as the fog whisked me away from those rotten fields.
Without Feng, that match would've been a total disaster. I was grateful to her, and still felt indebted even though I fulfilled my end of our deal.
The only thing left to stress about was Frank. I was going to have to tell him all the information I gave to Feng, and how without her help, The Entity would be starving for sacrifices right now.
Did I over-share with her?
I told her things I hadn't even told Frank yet..
Uhh.. Why didn't I tell him about David?
Honestly, there was no way to know how he would react to any of this. He was unpredictable..
The fog dumped me out in a seemingly endless meadow of brown grass, and I recognized it as the place Amanda and Charlotte had found me only a few days prior.
Not knowing my way, I had to trust that the fog placed me facing in the right direction.
I began to walk, hoping to eventually see the stone walls that held Ormond in its parameters.
My paper-bag mask was dampened by a grotesque cocktail of survivor blood, which caused it to stick to the side of my face. Slowly, trying not to rip it, I peeled the mask away from my cheeks and slipped it off over my head.
The careful removal prevented any tears, but the mask was ruined anyways. A matte of crimson had completely soaked through, which made it seem less like a paper-bag and more like a potato sack.
Good, maybe I'll get an upgrade.
As I walked through the meadow, I began to notice how sore my body was.
My knuckles were torn from missed Frenzies and dozens of cuts from the jagged corn stalks. When I lifted my once plain grey hoodie, now covered in red surface stains, my torso gave the impression that I had suffered a serious motorcycle accident.
The skin was shredded on both sides and decorated with some nasty bruises, all from the pallets being dropped on me.
Feng... Guess I can't blame her. I probably deserve this.
I swatted the back of my neck due to a random tickle, assuming an insect had landed. The fog was getting thicker in the meadow so I picked up my pace.
The second sensation I felt on my neck was more intense, like I was being assaulted by an insect, rather than tickled. When I turned around to catch a glimpse of whatever creature was harassing me, I froze in shock.
Standing barely ten feet away, and wearing the creepiest of grins was.. well, me. A mirror image of myself.
"The hell?"
It took a step closer.
This isn't happening.
"Not funny! Who are you!?"
Was this another killer that I just wasn't aquatinted with yet? A shape-shifter?
It didn't answer my question with words, simply raised its' arm to point at me, taking another step closer.
Panic seemed like the appropriate response, but so did inquisition.
What do I have to be scared of anyways? Dying? Hah!
"You forgot." It said quietly.
My brain scrambled, trying to conjure some type of memory that correlated.
"What did I forget?" I asked of the imposter.
It closed its' eyes and took another step.
"You.. FORGOT!!!"
As the inhuman scream tore through the foggy air, the imposters' eyes opened to reveal a startling change. No longer the same grey-blue, but a venomous yellow color that glowed brighter than the moon.. and eye-color wasn't the only change.
Black spikes erupted from its' back, crawling and twitching in the air like a tortured spider. It charged forward as I turned on the spot to run.
Like every character I hated in horror movies, I tripped over myself in fright and fell backwards, dropping my weapon.
The distorted and demonic form climbed on top of me. The black spikes that had spouted from its' back stabbed into the ground around my head. Its' face came close to mine.
Cold hands pressed against my chest and began to sink into my body like a kid depth-testing a mud puddle. My form had lost its' boundaries, and the sensation was a terror unlike anything I've ever experienced.
This thing was pure evil. I wasn't sure how I knew that, but it was a fact already cemented in my brain. Its' presence in my body induced a disorienting amount of dread and panic.
My hand frantically searched the earth around me for my dropped weapon.
Black spikes touched my temples on either side and began to apply pressure. The contact burned. I could feel blood being drawn as it dribbled down, reaching my ears.
I gotta get away!
My hand finally found my weapon, and although I had an awkward grip on it, I jammed the glass into the side of the imposter.
The black spikes retracted as the creature shrieked like a banshee and pulled away from me.
I tucked my knees in and used my legs to force the imposter off of me completely. Once I was on my feet, I didn't stop running, and I didn't look back.
Miraculously, my b-line took me to the front gate of Ormond. I continuously slammed the button that alerted those inside the walls of my arrival.
Please, hurry!
The gates weren't opening fast enough. My back was pressed against the tin door, as I kept my eyes on the misty meadows. I could hear the imposters' terrible screeches getting closer.
Open the door! Open the door!
The imposter emerged from the fog and into my view.
"Fuck! Someone open the door!!" I screamed as I hammered the button with my palm.
It was closing in on me. A hundred yards away, sixty yards away, thirty, fifteen..
The door slid open and I fell inside, taking whoever let me in to the ground. Scurrying to my feet, I slammed the door shut as hard as I could.
I expected to hear the creature banging or clawing, but it fell silent.
"Um, hello!? Why are you freaking out?"
Susie was on the snowy ground, glaring at me. I would've helped her up, but I didn't want to let go of the door. I needed to make sure it stayed closed.
"I asked you what your fucking deal is!?" She yelled, pushing herself off the ground.
"There's something out there! Chasing me!" I said frantically.
Susie looked annoyed. She wrestled me away from the door and flung it open.
"Don't!" I protested, but it was already too late.
"There's nothing out there, you big baby." She said, stepping aside to reveal the foggy meadow.
She was right.. there was nothing there.
