10. Just Us And The Wilderness

Our hands are tightly woven together as our eyes are cast upwards, a smile makes its way onto my face as the sound gets louder.
"I told you we'd get out of here", I look up at him as he smiles down at me I smile back at him as we look towards the sound of the helicopter.
I decide to try and get a better look and unlace our hands and race off to the tree and scale all the way up to the top, I look down to see Max trailing close behind pulling him self up over the edge.
"We should probably give them a sign to show there isn't wild animals in the enclosures", I explain to him, he looks down and behind him at his twitching tail then to my wings and raises an eyebrow at me.
"You know what I mean", I huff at him as I turn around to the sight of a helicopter coming into view.
We both start shouting the loudest we can and waving our arms and wings and jumping to get their attention, I see a person point at us and then they zoom off in the other direction.
"Guessing we wait now?" Max asks with his hands on his knees exhausted from the sudden activity. I nod as I make my way back down to the ground.
I notice my tail has gone back to its simple curl at the end slightly raised from the ground, more time that goes by the picture of freedom seems to shatter.

I'm sat down by the entrance of the tree when all of a sudden I hear faint gunshot noises, I snap my head up as my wings fan the slightest with my feathers and fur puffed but not fully at the sound of danger.
I look up at Max who has the same body language as me and the same wide eyes staring to the direction of the chaos.

My breath catches as there is a gunshot just down the hall from the door of our enclosure, I quickly stand as Max's wing goes out in front of me protectively as does his hand.
The door slams open as a swat team goes by and someone who looks to have authority comes in with a pistol, he glances behind the door on both sides and his gaze lands on us,
"You two out, follow me now!" He shouts as he heads back to the door,
"Wait how-" I start,
"A girl already told me about what was going on here we are going to get you to the hospital now come on!" He yells as gunshots sound close by, we follow him down the hall and out of an exit door to a massive car park where a helicopter sits, he motions with his hand to get in so we do, we sit across other swat members pulling our wings in tight to our backs careful not to bump the soldiers with them, we both flick our tails into our laps and keep them secured between our legs, I look at the soldier but they don't even give us a second glance as they are too focused on the fight, I look up at the door as Lizzy and a man I have never seen before which has featherless wings hops on.
We wave at each other as we begin to be lifted just as I see a white blur at the corner of my eye, I look to the blur and my eyes widen in size at the sight of a white robed person flinging herself onto the pilot side door, I watch as she swings the door open on the pilots side, I hear the pilot shouting along with a female voice.
The pilot loses control as we begin to be jolted around in the back, Max grabs my hand and leans close to my ear,
"Jump!" He yells at me, I give him the most serious are-you-serious look I have ever given. I look towards Lizzy and the other man and it seems they have the same idea.
I growl as I decide it's the best way, Max comes next to me holding onto the side and onto me, Lizzy does the same.
"Jump!" He says as my feet lift off the side and into the air, my wings automatically open to try and steady our fall, we land a few feet in front of the helicopter just as it crashes and rolls down a hill flames licking its way over it.

My heart is pounding in my ears as I look around to see that we are surrounded by trees in every direction, Max tugs me up as I see the robed people coming our way, no way in hell I'm going back.
We take off towards the trees and dodge our way through, our breaths laboured from the adrenaline rush we are getting.
I look behind me and notice we are not being followed anymore, I slow down as Max stops and leans on a tree to try and get his breath back.
"We should be good for now but we need to find Lizzy", I say as I open my wings away from my body to let myself cool down quicker.
"What about....that other dude?" He says between gasps of breaths.
Hmm I didn't think about him.
"He's like us we should help him too if we find him", He breaths out as I shake myself out.
"Once it calms down we will go back the way we came ok?" I ask as I look up at him,
He gives me a nod and looks toward the way we came and gives a sigh.
