37. Is this what death feels like?

I jolt upright my heart beating hard against my chest and I look around, Danny looks at me wide eyed in a chair in the corner of the room, I blink my eyes awake and look down and touch my chest, healed, I look to my side, healed and so is my hand and shoulder. I let my head fall backwards with an audible sigh,
"How long was I out for?" I ask as I reopen my eyes and look at Danny now leaning forward,
"About a day", she says as she tucks her hair behind her ear,
"We also decided that it was best if Caleb came to live here with you as well, knowing that you two are stronger together and all", she explains I raise an eyebrow at her just as I hear hurried footsteps, the door flies open nearly hitting Danny, Caleb rushes to my side and gives me a side hug,
"Oh thank god you don't half get me worried", he murmurs into my hair, he pull back and looks me over I smile and shake my head at him and clasp my hand in his, he starts to trace circles on the back of my hand with his thumb as Mr lanction comes in the room, we both look up at him,
"Osiris is coming to check up on you", he says with a nervous smile,
"I'm fine seriously", I say with a genuine smile,
"Try telling him that", I hear Caleb mutter, I dig my nail into his hand and he slightly jerks at the sudden pressure, I snicker and retract my claw.

After about half an hour of just recapping what happened Osiris suddenly appears at the door scaring the family half to death,
"Don't you purebloods ever knock?" The man says as Osiris walks in, he ignores him as he walks over to me and crouches down and scan his eyes over me,
"I'm fine", I say but his face scrunches with concern and looks at Caleb,
"From now on I want you two to protect eachother ok? No excuses", he abruptly gets up and leaves slamming the front door behind him slightly making the house shake,
"Wow, I think he's just upset cause of what happened", Danny says as I groan at him.

After helping me up out of bed we fly about outside for abit and then we are fed a full size salmon, I rush it down as I'm starving then we both go to the stream to take a quick drink, as we touch down outside the house Penny stumbles out the door and starts barreling towards me, I sigh as I bend down and wrap her up in my embrace, she tightly wraps her small arms around my neck and squeezes, toddlers.

After a full day of doing a few rounds of the farm like usual I show Caleb to the tree I normally sleep or keep an eye out in,
"Cozy", he sarcastically says, I mock gasp and try to shove him off the thin branch but he skillfully grabs on to the bark and whips himself back up, he then pins me up to the trunk and looks devishly into my eyes,
"You want to play?" He wears a smirk as he licks the tip of his canine, I squirm as I feel the familiar flutter of warmth in my groin,
"Right here? Risky business don't you think", I say as I lean towards his lips so my breath fans out across his cheeks, he growls lowly and seductively as I push him away and lean against the trunk a smug grin plastered on my face, he shakes his head as he scales behind me and pulls me in between his legs with his hands wrapped tightly around my waist and his tail entangling with mine, he wraps us up in his wings and I lay my head back against him and he rests his cheek against mine as I begin to fall into a peaceful sleep.

Two weeks later..

I walk past the barn bouncing a very happy Penny on my wings just as I hear arguing, I look down the driveway to see kids and adults walking off and Mr lanction stalking up the driveway, he catches my eye and gestures for me to come in, I oblige and follow him in, I know we have been having trouble with a new group the past few days but this is the first I've seen of them.
"Is it them again?" Danny asks from her place in the doorway, the man shrugs his shoulders as he thinks through his words,
"They kept threatening us and telling us to kill them or be killed", he looks over at us as he admits this sending a shiver to go through me which make any feathers puff, Penny just giggles at me.
"What do we do? Call the police?" The man snaps his gaze to Danny who visibly coils back,
"We have no evidence there's no point", he starts as he looks back to the fireplace,
"Just act normal and keep a look out you two we will stay in here until you find anything", he says as he turns to me, I nod and lift Penny over my head and hand her to the man, I catch Calebs eyes as he starts to walk towards me,
"They'd more or likely come from the forest way it's more discreet", dread fills me as I look at Danny and Penny looking back at me with the same look, I sigh and walk out the door and towards the barn.

About an hour has passed without so much as a whisper and it has me dreadfully on edge as I anticipate any movement in the forest,
"Midnight", I look down to see Caleb point down at Midnight skillfully scaling up the tree towards us, she makes it up and she meows at me loudly and paws at me, I lose my breath as I notice her eye is swollen shut and her fur is raised,
"Something's wrong", I blurt out suddenly aware of the crickets in the field, I stand and smell the air, I look towards the house to see a light glow from the light downstairs,
"What do you mean?" I hold my hand up as the wind changes directions and it hits us both in the face, I gasp as I recognise it to be smoke, it sends us darting off towards the house to see that the glow in the house was a raging fire covering all of downstairs, my chest tightens at the thought of Penny and Danny possibly burning to death, I didn't even know I was screaming out until I bolt towards the front door and rip it open, flames gush out sending me backwards, tears start spilling down my face as I look up at the bedroom window to see that it's full of smoke,
"We need to get up there! We need to get them out!" I scream, I jump up scalding my hand on a bit of wood that has been turned to charcoal, I poke my head up into the window and smash it open, I scream their names and their is no answer,
"Jasabelle! It's going to collapse!" I hear Calebs desperate cries as I jump through the window and turn towards the stairs to be blasted by flames, I scream in agony as it catches my left wing, but I carry on and jump through the flames burning my tail in the process but I don't care I will get to them, I make it into the bathroom to find the wife and husband huddled together coughing their lungs out,
"Go to your bedroom and jump out the window! GO!" They seem to move into action and hobble out, I go into the next bedroom to see Danny huddled on the bed rocking back and forth,
"My baby!" She cries out sobbing her heart out, my breath squeezes out in ragged puffs as I pull her towards me,
"Where is she?!" I shake her as she points to the stairs, I blink and shove her towards the other bedroom, I take another lungful of smoke and tighten my wings around me and jump down, I land on the first floor and fall to the ground and scream and writhe in pain as my whole back, wings and tail is burnt to hell, I stagger up shouting for Penny to cry out or anything I squint as the smoke along with the burning fire around me starts to slowly cook me alive, I go to the front room to hear her small ragged cries, I gasp as I lunge for the door keeping my arm Infront of my face from the raging fire, I yank the door open and Penny looks up the side of her face black,
"Oh my god!" I quickly scoop her up into my arms and turn around just as there is an explosion sending scorching hungry flames flying towards me, Penny screams I scream as I turn and hug my singed wings around her as I jump through a window, glass flys everywhere into my skin in my hair and we land on the ground, I look back at the house with Penny underneath me to see the flames growing towards us, I splutter as I crawl away to a nearby tree, I look down at Penny's face I frown as her eyes are wide open and she is struggling to breath, I splutter again spraying blood onto the ground by her head and look down to see a big shard of glass going through my stomach and into Penny, I don't know what to do so I scream out into the open air as we both begin to fall limp.
