32. Responsibilities

It's been about a week since me and Caleb have been reunited, within that time Osiris gained most of his trust but not as much as me, with Caleb he can only hand him treats whereas he can successfully touch my feathers and the fur on my tail without getting a growl, he decided that it's uncomfortable to touch me on my skin as he feels it too. I've talked to Caleb about the farm that we are supposed to be going to, he agrees that it's the most safest place we could go.

We are silently eating some berries together while I'm balancing expertly on the branch and Caleb on the platform with the boy playing with Midnight, we both snap our eyes to the door a few moments later a knock rings through sending Osiris zipping to the door, I crane my neck to see who it is but can't see past his tall frame, he closes the door a notch and looks back to us,
"Get ready your going to the farm today", he says as he blinks, I nearly drop my berry as I look at Caleb with a hint of nervousness, he looks back at me with a tight smile and shoves the rest of the berries into his gaping mouth.
"You taking Midnight?" A small voice says from behind me, I squeeze my eyes shut then reopen them, I turn around to face him,
"Yes", I simply say, I gulp as I eye him, I slightly feel bad. He nods and turns away from me, I gather Midnight in my arms and place her into the carrier, I lock the door and pick up the carrier and head towards where Caleb and Osiris is patiently waiting, we both go out together to be stopped by Osiris,
"One at a time", I roll my eyes at him as he gestures for me to go first, I step out the door and feel a tug on my feathers, as if I'm going to fly away, I could but it'd seem stupid to do, I hear him lock the door and start leading me to a police like contained truck, we stop at the back door as he leans around and gets someone's attention, I look up at him with a raised eyebrow, he just shrugs down at me as we both step back as a bustling woman rounds the car and to the back door she swiftly unlocks it and throws open the door, she steps aside and I'm led in, there are metal seats lining the sides of the inside and it's pretty cramped, I hear the door shut and the light disappears my eyes quickly adjusts and I decide to sit on the floor by the front with my back against the wall and watching the door with midnight securely beside me.
I sigh as I feel the engine turn on, guessing we aren't going together then, I can already imagine Caleb arguing with Osiris right now, I groan as I place my head in my hands and feel the jolt of the accelerater, we take a few bendy curves hear and there.

After what feels like an hour of driving the truck finally comes to a halt, I then hear a toddler scream and I bolt upright, I listen harder and hear the sounds of chickens, cows in the distance, goats, turkeys I think? I follow the sound of the hurried woman and I assume Osiris gets out of another car and hurries towards the door.
The doors peel open sending a flood of light into the cramped space, I blink as I stare at the woman with Osiris behind her, I hear approaching footsteps from the side of the truck and hushed whispers,
"Come on Belle", Osiris says as he has now taken the woman's place,
"What about Caleb?" I ask low enough so even the woman wouldn't here,
"He's in a neighbouring farm he's fine he will even be able to visit you", he says hopefully, I chew on my lip as I grab the carrier, and start to head out. Osiris gives me space and I drop down onto the ground and start to look around it is indeed a farm alright, I can see that the fields of crops and pasture could go on for miles, it probably does, some pastures even lead into the dense thicket of woods that surrounds the farm, I feel the same tug on my feathers as the woman closes the door behind me and scurries off, I turn around as Osiris has a firm grip on my feathers, to see a man and woman with a younger looking girl beside them with a giggling toddler in her arms, I blink at them and look up at Osiris, he is smiling at them and takes a few steps forward,
"Hello Mr and Mrs lanction, and the two babies of the family of course, he thrusts his hand towards them leaning forward and shaking each of their hands, I scan my gaze over them and land on the toddler it's eyes are still fixed on me, Osiris leans back next to me again,
"Hello to you too Osiris and Jasabelle?" The man looks at me with a kind smile, I slowly nod my head and the woman beams at me,
"Well it's great to have you here we are all excited to get to know you more", she finishes and looks towards Osiris,
"She will speak she's just nervous at the moment, she's in a new place, she'd be better once she has a fly about and gets to know you lot", he explains as he looks at me then to the family,
"Shall we place the GPS on her now before you leave", the woman asks, Osiris nods his head and the woman hurries off to I'm guessing the main house of farm house as they would call it, I slightly flinch as the toddler starts crying with its arms outstretched towards me, I look down at it as my feathers slightly shake and my tail starts to twitch nervously, the girl holding her starts to coo at her but she starts to thrash about with its tiny arms stretched towards me still, I feel my eyes glow at the sudden noise, the girl notices and she smiles at me with awe,
"Wanna hold her? She seems to like you, I can take your cat in to be settled down into where you will be staying for now if you want", the man seems to reconsider me holding his granddaughter, she gives me no choice as she bends down and swipes the carrier from me and the toddler grips onto my neck, my eyes go wide and I quickly move my arms to support the wriggling baby.
I look down at her as it makes babling noises and bounces happily in my arms, what a strange little thing, she grabs towards the top of my wing poking up behind my shoulders, I move it slightly forward and she squeals excitedly as she grabs at it and moves the feathers around with wonder, I follow the girl with my eyes to see her go into a barn just out of my view, I sigh as the toddler in my arms giggles as I raise my feathers for her. I look up at the man staring at me with either confusion or happiness I can't exactly tell he's definitely nervous about me having the babbling mess in my arms poking around at me. I snap my eyes up to meet the surprised face of the woman coming back from the houses with a small device with an antenna on the end,
"Alright then turn around Belle", Osiris gently says, I turn around and feel them part my wings to expose my back,
"Just wonderful, I didn't expect her to look like a pure angel", I hear the woman whisper supposedly to her husband, I feel a pull on one of the back feathers right at the root my nerves grow by the minute, the toddler looks over my shoulder and as soon as she sees what they are doing she starts screaming at them and starts flailing her hands around in front of her sometimes hitting the top of my wing, I hook her underneath the arms and bring her in front of me and start shushing her and bouncing her in my arms but she has her eyes fixed on the person still tugging on my feather, I make my eyes brighten which instantly catches her attention, she stops crying and opens her mouth in awe, I start pinning and dilating my eyes to keep her from crying when I hear a god awful snap, I quickly turn around to see a broken feather in Osiris' palm, he looks at me with an oops look and I bare my teeth at him,
"I'm sorry Belle these clamps are really rusty", I pin my eyes at him as I hold the toddler close still bouncing her, the girl has arrived back and she seems surprised I've still go the toddler in my arms,
"Sort them out then", I growl out to him, I see the man slightly widen his eyes and Osiris instantly starts explaining,
"Don't worry it's just her she doesn't like anyone messing with her back feathers, it goes against their nature", he takes a can of lubricant oil from the woman and starts to oil the clamps up, the man nods as he gazes over at me,
"Looks like you made a friend for life there", he laughs as I look at the toddler, she yawns and lets her head fall against my shoulder, I blink as I realise she's about to fall asleep, I look at Osiris with a glare as I turn back around, I feel the same tugging again and a small click, I look behind me and part my wings better for me to see, they've attached it to the root of one of my back feathers, I can hardly feel it.
"Right that's that done, anything else before I go?" He asks as he looks towards the man and woman, they both look at me and shake their heads, he nods and looks down at me,
"You behave and do as your told I'll be back soon", he smiles at me and goes toward his car, I look back to the family as the man lets out a breath,
"Ok then let's get you settled in, but first", he says as he nears me and slowly scoops his hands around the sleeping toddler and brings her to his shoulder, I let out a breath and shake my arms out, he swiftly takes her inside and re emerges again, he slaps his hands together as he gestures for me to follow him, I slowly start to follow behind as the girl makes her way beside me, I give her a slight smile as we head into the barn,
"So this is where you are going to stay for now but I don't see the harm in letting you out in the morning but we will introduce you to the animals first, Danny want to do the honours?" He says to now I know who is Danny, she smiles beside me ,
"Sure, come on", she quickly says as she rushes out the barn.

She quickly shows me about the farm showing me all the animals and how I'm not allowed to eat them for dinner, she explains that she will leave food for me on the front porch every morning for me as it's her job, I don't say much to her the whole tour, she then gets to a point in the field and she looks out,
"I'm not allowed to let you fly around today but you will tomorrow", she seems distant as she gazes at a nearby tree on a hill,
"Can't wait", I say just as I hear the man call for Danny,
"Your dad's calling you", I say she looks at me with her eyebrows furrowed, she looks back at the house that is at least a mile or two away, she digs around in her pocket and brings her phone out, I haven't used them in ages, she brings the phone to her ear looking back at the house,
"Did you call me?" She pauses and I look out in the distance,
"Oh wow ok, it's because Belle heard you", she pauses for a quick second again,
"Yeah I know that's what I thought, ok I'm going to go and get her settled in with Midnight ok bye", she hangs up and looks up at me,
"How did you hear him", she asked bewildered, I look to the house and back to Danny, I shrug,
"Good hearing?" I say with a smile, she laughs and we start heading back. I notice that she starts to look at me with a questioning look, I look back at her,
"Just blurt it out I know your dieing to ask me something", I say as I gaze at her,
"It's kind of rude but how old are you?" She tilts her head at me, I raise my eyebrows,
"I'm eighteen by the way", she quickly adds with a smile,
"Round about the same age as you I think", I say unsure, the conversation ends as we round the corner to the barn.

She opens up the door and I slip inside, she gives me a quick smile as she shuts me inside, I huff as I look around to see Midnight bounce towards me her tail held high as usual, I smile down at her and cuddle her in my arms, I give her a light purr as I make my way to a corner covered by hay and settle down, I soon make a makeshift bed and huddle up with midnight in my arms, we both fall to sleep more or less the same time.
