Chapter Seventeen: World Engine

Zod's ship massive craft landed in the middle of the city, standing up as though it were a tripod. At the center of its three 'legs,' a beam of blue energy began firing into the ground. Numerous people ran, screaming for their lives, as the ground collapsed beneath them. But it was useless, they fell into an abyss that appeared bottomless.

That was when Wanda's pod crashed a few miles out. She slowly stood up out of the pod, and removed the Kryptonian breathing apparatus. She watched in horror as another surge of energy came out of the craft, making an even bigger hole in the Earth's surface.

She tried to read (Y/N)'s thoughts, to see if he was anywhere nearby. When she couldn't hear anything, she decided to say something first.

'(Y/N)? Are you ok?'

'Wanda? Is that you?'

'It is. What's happening?'

'Zod's trying to terraform Earth into a copy of Krypton. I'm in the Indian Ocean, on my way to destroy the world engine. But you have to destroy his ship in order to stop the terraforming.'

'I'll call the Avengers. They can help me.'

'Do it. I'll take care of things here.'

'Be safe, (Y/N).'

'I will. I love you.'

'I love you too.'

Wanda broke the connection between the two of them. She watched as the Avengers' quinjet flew by the Kryptonian ship, trying to destroy it. 

'Good thing they're already here,' she thought.

"Go in for another run, Natasha. We're gonna try and destroy it from the ground," Steve said. He, Sam, and Rhodey had suited up and were ready to attack the menace that had appeared above the city. 

"I'm getting a transmission," Natasha said as she pressed a few buttons.

The infamous image of Tony Stark appeared on one of the screens.

"Looks like you guys could use some help out here," he said.

"That would be pretty good right now," Sam said.

"Alright, well, don't worry, daddy's home."

"The structure appears weakest where the legs connect to the rest of the craft. I would advise concentrating fire on those areas," Vision said.

"Got it," Tony said, then ended the transmission.

"What about Wanda and (Y/N)?" Rhodey asked.

"They'll be here, I'm sure," Steve said as he opened the back ramp of the quinjet and jumped out, followed closely by Sam, Rhodey, and Vision. They landed on the ground a few hundred feet away from the ship, watching as Natasha flew the jet in for another pass, and Tony attacked in his latest Iron Man suit. As Tony approached the ship, numerous tentacle like appendages shot out and tried to grab and shoot him. One shot successfully hit his suit, and he stalled for a moment before continuing to fly.

"Why does it always have to be aliens?" He asked nobody in particular. Rhodey flew up beside him to assist in the destruction of the legs, Sam and Vision taking another one. Steve was on the ground, fighting off the Kryptonian soldiers that were attempting to defend the craft.

"It's not always aliens, Stark, sometimes it's robots," Wanda said as she floated in to assist Steve.

Tony got hit with another blast from the ship. "What is this guy's problem?"

"From what I know, they're trying to copy their world onto Earth," Wanda replied.

"Great. So this is just a massive copy and paste machine."

"Essentially. (Y/N) is destroying one that touched down in the Indian Ocean."

"I wonder how he's doing. Good kid, I must say," Stark said.

(Y/N) flew around the structure, half looking for a way to destroy it, half dodging the tentacle-blasters that were attacking him. His heat rays had done nothing to damage the ship so far, and now that the tentacle-blasters were going after him, he doubted he would find a way to destroy it easily. He shot heat rays at the tentacles, but every time he destroyed one, it seemed that two more would take its place. (Y/N) quickly flew back, out of their range, to use his X-ray vision to identify potential weak points. It appeared that the only way to destroy the engine was to destroy it from the inside-and the only way to get inside was through the massive beam of energy shooting down into the surface.

(Y/N) knew what he had to do. He flew inside the energy beam and started flying up, slowly. He tried to increase his speed, but the beam was strong. He would have to try harder. He began pushing further and further into the beam, until, finally, he was at the opening of the ship. He pushed himself to the limit, rocketing through the ship's systems and out the other end. He watched as the energy beam was deactivated, and the engine collapsed on itself.

"The terraforming has begun to slow down," F.R.I.D.A.Y informed Tony.

"Well how about that? He destroyed the engine," Tony told the rest of the team.

"He'll come. He has to," Steve said, throwing his shield at a Kryptonian soldier.

"Let's hope so," Rhodey said, fighting off a tentacle-blaster.
