Chapter Forty-Nine: Thanos' Return

Thanos and Darkseid regarded one another as the latter approached the compound. (Y/N) was sure he was hunting for the stones.

(Y/N) looked to his left and saw that Tony, Steve, and Thor were all watching the situation as well. He made his way over to them as Thor called Stormbreaker and Mjolnir to him.

"What's the plan?" (Y/N) asked.

"His brother looks like he's going to be a problem," Tony said.

"Oh, I'll take Darkseid. I was asking what you guys were gonna do about Thanos."

"We'll take him together," Steve said.

"I like this plan. Good luck, you three," (Y/N) said as he floated away to fight Darkseid. The other Avengers dropped down to the ground, and approached Thanos, still sitting on a pile of rubble.

"You could not live with your own failure," Thanos said. "And where did that bring you? Back to me."

They took their positions around Thanos.

"I thought by eliminating half of life the other half would thrive," Thanos continued, "But you have shown me that's impossible. And as long as there are those that remember what was, there will always be those that are unable to accept what can be. They will resist."

"Yep, we're all kinds of stubborn," Tony said.

"I'm thankful," Thanos said, standing and grabbing his massive double-bladed sword from out of the ground. "Because now I know what I must do. I will shred this universe down to its last atom. And then with the stones you've collected for me create a new one teeming with life that knows not what it has lost but only what it has been given. A grateful universe."

"Born out or blood," Steve said.

"They'll never know it, because you won't be around to tell it."

Thor threw Mjolnir, Steve swung with his shield, and Tony shot repulsor beams. The fight had begun.

(Y/N) floated down in front of Darkseid, blocking his path into the ruined compound.

"Your brother was an easy win for me. Surrender, and I'll let you go," (Y/N) said.

"I'm not my brother." His voice was deeper, darker, than Thanos'.

"We'll see."

(Y/N) fired a heat ray at Darkseid, who blocked it with his staff. The staff absorbed the energy, and (Y/N) foolishly thought he could take a blow from the staff. The energy from his heat ray was knocked right back at him through the staff, and it sent him flying into a wall. Darkseid leapt at (Y/N), his staff raised. (Y/N) was able to dodge the blow and punched Darkseid back, who dropped the staff.

(Y/N) flew at Darkseid, who got up and was able to hit him with a punch. (Y/N) instantly recovered, and floated around behind Darkseid, but something most unexpected occurred as he did.

A red laser fired from Darkseid's eyes, angling itself at blinding speed. It hit (Y/N) from where he was floating behind Darkseid, knocking him down from where he stood. Darkseid grabbed his staff up off the ground, swinging it down at (Y/N). He rolled out of the way, but the staff snagged his cape, preventing (Y/N) from escaping Darkseid's punches.

Tony fired all his repulsors at Thanos, forcing him back a fair bit, but he was able to block the many shots with his sword. Thanos then deflected the balsts back at Tony, who was knocked away.

Thor threw Mjolnir up in the air, then hit it like a baseball with Stormbreaker. The hammer hit Thanos, cracking his helmet. Thor then swung at Thanos with the axe, only for the attack to be parried and for Stormbreaker to be knocked away. Thanos kicked Thor into the ground, and when Thor called Stormbreaker back to him, Thanos intercepted it, beginning to plunge the axe into Thor's chest. Thor resisted, but still the axe pressed against him.

All of a sudden, Thanos was hit off of Thor by a flying Mjolnir. His helmet shattered, and he dropped Stormbreaker. Turning to see his attacker, Thanos grabbed his sword from where it was lying.

The hammer returned to the hand of the man who had picked it up, Steve Rogers.

Steve rushed Thanos, swinging the hammer and knocking him back. Steve then threw the hammer and the shield at the same time, causing them to collide, which sent a shockwave out that knocked Thanos over. Steve then called Mjolnir back to him, and his shield boomeranged around. Steve then used Mjolnir to hit Thanos with lightning. Fortunately for Thanos, his armor was resistant to the blasts, and he got back up, knocking Mjolnir away when Steve threw it again.

Thanos grabbed his sword and attacked viciously, Steve barely blocking his swings. Each time Thanos drew his sword back, he took a chip out of the shield, until only half of it remained. He then kicked Steve back a fair bit.

It was at this point that Thanos' combined armies deployed from his craft. Steve looked on at his comrades, who were all out of the fight in some form. Thor had been knocked out by one of Thanos' kicks, Tony was unconscious, and (Y/N) was still absorbing punches from Darkseid a few hundred feet away.

Steve was the only one left. He tightened the broken shield to his arm, and stood ready to face the whole army.

A voice sounded in Steve's earpiece.

"On your left."
