Chapter 5: It's worse than I thought it would be

(A/N this I going to be a long chapter to make up for the last one, which was pretty short)
"Wake up! Caitlyn wake up!"
"What? what is it? Oh My God! Run! Get everything and run!"
I looked at everything. I'm petrified. The horde of zombies we got through as we were driving here has caught up with us. This was a stupid idea. what was I thinking? sure, of coarse it's going to be fine, they won't catch up. Sure they won't! As everyone raced out to the van, the zombies followed. everyone was chucking their bags in the van and jumping in.
"Drive! Now, or were all zombie bait!" they scream at me.
"No! not without Emma!" I scream back
"Forget her, just drive!"
Just as they said that Emma was running to the car.
"Here she is!" I point to her and everyone looks... not at her, but at all the zombies behind her. she manages to leap into the car, although her shoe wasn't so lucky and instead it was left behind.
"My shoe!" she yells, crying.
"Who gives a damn about your fucking shoe!" Kyle yells at her.
"I can't run without it!" she cries back.
"Well, grab a tissue box and use it!" it seems like this isn't going to end. luckily, I had a solution.
"Guys, stop!" I look at Emma now "I have an extra pair in my bag"
"Thank you" she replies
"You're just lucky I had a pair" I inform her.
"So where to?" asks Jonathan
"I don't know yet, but we'll know when we get there" I answer
"Shouldn't we have a plan?" mat joins in.
"I guess so" I reply. I then direct my voice to Brianna as I look at her through the rear view mirror for a brief second "where to?"
"Umm, on the map it says Lacey River is the closest place"
"Is it big or small?" I question
"Small-ish"
"Define ish"
"Well, it isn't small like a town on western movies, but it isn't as big as a city"
"Not much help. what's after that?"
"Violet Hill, which, before you ask is bigger than Lacey River"
"We could go to Lacey river for a pit stop, then we could go to violet hill for the night?" suggested Jonathan
"Alright. Who knows how to hunt?" I ask
"I've been out shooting before but only once" Brianna says blankly.
"Ok well that's better then having no experience at all" says Emma
"True. So I guess that's sorted. We will find food on our pit stop and maybe a few other things we can find then we will go to Violet Hill to get some rest, but this time we are sleeping in the car just incase. Also we will take it in turns to keep watch so get some sleep"

~~~~~~~ two hours later ~~~~~~~
We arrive at Lacey River.
"Wakey wakey, bitches. Time to get up. Pit stop." I wake them all up. we all get out of the van with weapons and begin our hunt"
"Stay close. Kyle, I know you probably think you should be hunting, but you need to stay here" I tell him
"What? fuck no! who made you boss?" he argues
"Actually, she seems to know a lot and every time she takes charge she's doing the right thing by all of us so shut up and listen" Matt's opinion gave me confidence. I know it's not really the appropriate time to say this, but I think I am beginning to like him.
"Yeah, but I am not staying at the car. I probably have more experience then her" he replies
"Yes, but could you hear me out! you have the loudest voice out of us all, which is something were gonna need if a whole bunch of zombies are coming our way. so you need to stay here and yell if you see anything, okay" I explain
"Fine, just go and hurry up" he huffs
"Okay let's go" I follow everyone along the side of the river.
It is a beautiful river. It's a shame that chances are by tomorrow it's most likely going to be red-ish-brown with bodies floating down it.
"Hey guys, I think we've got a wombat over here!" Matt yells out
"Kill it" Brianna yells back
I look at her and smile.
"Got it!" he laughs
"Yeah!" Jonathan yells
"Okay, I know it's not much but we've got to get back. We still have to get to Violet Hill and by looking at the sun's position we don't have that long considering it's another hour before we get there" I explain
"Yeah let's go" Matt agrees. He smiles at me an we all begin to walk back to the car"
~~~~~~~back at the car~~~~~~~
"Kyle were back"
"What took yous so long" he asks sarcastically
"Very funny" Brianna replies sarcastically as well.
"We got a wombat but that's all" Jonathan tells Kyle.
"Of coarse that's all yah got. you were only out there for 5 seconds" Kyle exaggerates
"Hey, shut up! at least it's something. I don't see you with a wombat in your hand?" Emma shouts at him.
"Well nah shit Sherlock. I had to stay at the car. next time you can. when we got back you'd either be dead or crying" he shouts back
"Shut up! you don't even know me! next time i'll tell everyone to leave you behind"
"How did you even know I said that? who told her, huh?"
"No one. I could hear you. so could all the zombies that you were planning on leaving me with!"
"Both of you just fucking shut up before you get us killed!" I yell
"Umm, guys..." Brianna points to the direction we came from.
Zombies had heard Kyle and Emma arguing and screaming and they joined up with the previous horde ad were all coming directly to us! They were so close!
"Get in the fucking car now!" Matt yelled
I started up the car but as soon as I turned the key and icon popped up signalling the fuel tank was empty.
"Fuck!" I yelled
"What?!" Everyone asked
"The fuel tank is empty" I reply
Emma starts crying.
"Lets run it" Brianna says as she goes to get out of the car.
"I have fuel in the back seat, give it!" I say
They give me the fuel container and I jump out of the car. I run around and fill up the car's fuel. The zombies are so close i can feel the heat off of their rotting flesh. One is so close it goes to take a swing at me.when it's full I take it out and run to the front seat. The zombie strikes my top sleeve and slices it open, though it doesn't get my skin. "ahhhh" I cry
I slide in through the door and I startle engine again. It won't start!
"Come on come on come on!" I scream in fear as tears roll down my cheeks. A zombie bangs on the window and I jump. Another one and another one. They start to climb on the bonnet.
"Get it started!" they scream
"I'm trying" I shout back
I try again and it starts, but the horde has caught up. I reverse it then step on the petal and drive forward. I slam into a zombie which knocks over another one behind it. I drive over them and I'm off.
"Thank you Jesus!" Kyle yells in relief
"I didn't think we would make it" Jonathan says
"Neither did I" Matt agrees
Brianna tries to calm Emma down. I never believed I would see what happened next; Kyle wrapped his arm around Emma and held her close.
"It's okay" he whispered to her "everything is going to be okay".
Everyone looks around at each other still trying to take in what had happened. I just smile and keep driving.
