"Mom..." I say, looking between her and the Prophet suit in her hands. "I can explain."
"What are you doing with this?" She asks, an exasperated tone in her voice. "Why do you have this?"
"Mom..." I trail off again. "I can explain, it's-"
"Y/N, stop dancing around the question. Answer me." I take a deep breath, starting to hyperventilate. I have to tell her the truth. I don't have a choice.
"I... I'm Prophet." I say finally, sighing.
"You're what?!?!" Her voice is shrill and loud. "Y/N, what the hell are you talking about?"
"I'm Prophet, okay?"
"Do you know how much trouble you're in?" She exclaims, standing up.
"Mom, you need to-"
"No, no, I don't need to anything!" She shouts. "You're never leaving this house again, do you understand?"
"Mom, please, you can't do this! I need to protect people."
"And I need to protect you." She says. "You're my only daughter, my only family."
"Yeah, I know that, but this is my life! People need protecting. And I have these powers-"
"Wait, wait, what powers?" She asks, sitting back down again.
"How do you think I did all that stuff?" I ask. "I have powers, Mom, I have since I was little."
"I don't understand."
"Me neither." I say. "Mom, who is my Dad? You never mention him, you never even act like he exists!"
"Because he doesn't!" She exclaims. I raise an eyebrow and she sighs. "I don't know who your father is."
"Is this a Mamma Mia type situation, or-"
"No, Y/N. I used a sperm bank. You never even really had a father." I swallow thickly.
"So you really know nothing about him?"
"I don't, baby. I wish I did. Why do you take a sudden interest?"
"I think that's where my powers come from. Bruce and Tony are going to help me find him."
"Bruce and Tony?" She asks.
"Bruce Banner and Tony Stark." I explain.
"Wait, like the Avengers? Oh my God, is that what this 'internship' was? Just a cover?"
"Yeah..." I admit quietly.
"But Peter does that, too. He's not an Avenger is he?"
"No, no," I answer quickly. Maybe one day my mom can know about Peter being Spiderman, but that day is not today. "He has an actual internship there. But that's how we became closer."
"Wait, let's go back. You're enlisting the Avengers to help you find your father behind my back?"
"I couldn't tell you my true purpose for finding him, Mom, and you never want to talk about him." I say defensively. "But my powers can help people, no matter where they came from."
"Y/N, it's dangerous."
"Mom, I'm surrounded by the Avengers!" I exclaim. "I mean, if anyone can keep me safe, they can." Mom considers this for a moment.
"You know, I'm not thrilled with this. It's going to take some getting used to." She says.
"Wait, you're considering letting me do this?" I ask excitedly.
"You're surrounded by people who can keep you safe and I know you can protect yourself."
"Thank you so much Mom!" I exclaim, throwing my arms around her. She laughs.
"I love you, honey," She says, hugging back. "I just want you to be safe."
"I will be, I promise." I say, hoping that it's true. I make sure not to mention that I was kidnapped by HYDRA a few weeks ago.
"But I'll only let you do this on one condition."
"Anything." I say quickly.
"You have to tell me everything. Every time you go out and do your Prophet thing, or you get hurt, you tell me. No matter what, okay?"
"Okay, Mom. I promise." She smiles.
"Okay, I'll get out of here." She says, standing up. "I love you."
"Love you too, Mom."
"Now get some rest." She shuts the door behind her. I pull out my phone, texting Peter to come over. It's only a few minutes before there's a knock at my window.
I walk over to it, opening it for him. He slides in, taking off his mask.
"What's up, is everything okay?" He asks, looking concerned.
"My mom found my Prophet suit. She knows everything." I say, and I watch Peter's mouth drop open.
"Does she know about me?"
"No, I didn't tell her you were Spiderman." I say. Peter sighs. We sit on the edge of my bed.
"Did you tell her about HYDRA? Or California?"
"I kept the details pretty minimal. But she knows. I mean, what was it like when May found out?"
"It took some getting used to, yeah, but she came around. It's just like adding one big part of your life with another." I sigh.
"Yeah, you're right. It's just going to take a while to adjust." I say.
"Everything's gonna work out. It always does." Peter assures me, and I nod. "How'd it go with Tony and Bruce earlier?"
"Good. I mean, I think it was good. I got a cookie." I say, and Peter grins.
"Well, that's always a plus." Peter jokes, and I laugh.
"Y/N? Everything okay in there?" Mom calls, and my eyes widen.
"Uh, yup! Just watching TV! I'm going to bed soon!" I exclaim.
"Okay, honey, don't stay up too late." She says, and I sigh.
"I won't!" I shout, and I hear her footsteps depart. I sigh. "You better go." I say to Peter, and he nods.
"I'll see you at school?" He asks as we go towards the window.
"Of course," I reply. He sneaks out of the window and stands on the fire escape, turning back towards me. "Go save the world, Spiderman."
"It's not really the world. It's just Queens." He says, and I laugh.
"Close enough." I give him a kiss on the cheek before he puts his mask back on and he's off.
