Today I was going to be training as a builder. I had been dreading this moment all week. Mostly because that meant working with Gally. But also, I really suck at getting my hands dirty and using tools. Surprisingly, gardening wasn't too bad, so maybe building wouldn't be either.
Newt wasn't going to be with me today since Alby had said that I'm doing fine on my own and that I had adjusted to glader life quite quickly. I hated that. I hated being here. I want to know what's our there. This isn't where I belong.
Gally had started me off on an easy project, hamering nails into the wooden walls. Though what seemed easy to him, was indeed very difficult for me. I couldn't let him see that though. I began pushing the nails into the planks while trying not to smash my fingers in the process. I could feel Gally's disapproving eyes on me as I did so. He watched my every move, trying to point out anything I did wrong.
Then, I did it. I smashed my ring finger. It bled and I winced. I couldn't let Gally see me so weak, so I quickly wiped away the blood and pretended nothing happened, though I could feel it throbbing in pain ever time I moved it.
"Damn, Shank. What'd you do, smash your finger bloody?" Gally asked walking over to me, a deviant smirk across his face.
"It's nothing, Gally. I'm fine," I said pitting my hand in my shorts pocket to hide the blood. Gally pulled my hand out and put it infront of his gaze.
"Doesn't look like nothing," he said studying my finger.
I was just glad that he didn't seem to notice the ring on my opposite hand. I didn't need another awkward conversation.
"Come on. I'm taking you to the medjacks," Gally said grabbing my wrist. I pulled way, and went back to hammering.
"I'm fine. I'm not going, I don't need help," I said, trying not to sound weak infront of Gally. He looked at me, his eyes intense. I had never noticed how green his eyes were untill I met his serious gaze. They were beautiful. A shade of dark green, like the tree leaves in the deadheads.
I had gotten lost in thought when I felt a pair of hands hoist me over there shoulder. It was Gally.
"PUT ME DOWN!" I yelled. I could feel the smile running across his lips as I did so, struggling to get out of his grasp. He liked being stronger than me. I guess it made him feel more superior. B.S if you ask me.
We finally made it to the medjacks hut as he put me down, pleased with himself.
"It was for your own good, sweetheart. You're too stubborn," Gally says opening the hut door. He walked in and I dont follow.
"Exuse me, what?! Sweetheart?" I say, wincing as the words escape my mouth. A wave of pure disgust washes over me. Gally, embarrassed infront of the medjacks by my yelling, leaves the hut and heads back to work, not hesitating to push me into the hut first. I growled at him as he did this. I was angry. Beyond angry. I was pissed.
"What brings you in?" asks Jeff, one of the two medjacks. I stare at floor.
"Gally," I hissed, looking back up at Jeff, who had noticed the blood on my hand.
"Let me take a look," he said, gently moving my hand towards him, to get a better view. "Looks like you busted a few blood vessels in your finger. First time I've seen something like that here. Most of the time it's the Slicers who get hurt. Anyway, you'll have to get it cleaned up and wrapped and you won't be able to use it for a few days," Jeff finished, pulling me a chair to sit in.
I sat down and sighed, tiredly. I was sick of these boys telling me what to do. Especially Gally. At least Jeff was just doing his job, and nicely at that.
"Where's Clint?" I questioned as Jeff finished wrapping up my finger with a white bandage.
Jeff doesn't look up but replies, "he's out sick today. So, it's just me. Luckily, we have only had a few come in today with only minor injuries." I nod and waited patiently for Jeff to finish.
When he did, I stood up and walked out, but not before thanking him. I gave him a friendly smile, then headed to go find Newt. I hadn't seen my friend in hours and I needed a little time away from Gally. Actually, that wasn't true. I never really wanted to see Gally again, but that's something that this small glade won't allow.
I found Newt sitting at a picnic table with Minho, eating lunch. Right, lunch. I had totally forgotten about eating. I guess the sight of blood, really just made me lose my appetite. That, and the fact that I had a million guys staring at me all day which, not gonna lie, made me a bit insecure about my weight. It was fine though. I could afford to skip a few meals here and there to feel confident within myself.
I sat down at their table. "Oh hey, Eve. We were just talking about you. Where have you been? I didn't see you with the other builders?" Minho said, taking a bite of his sandwich.
"Oh, nowhere. I just needed a brake out of the heat, that's all," I lied. Minho seemed to believe me, but Newt was not so gullible. He looked me in the eyes, confused to the reason behind my lie. Then he looked down to see my hand, bandaged up.
"Eve, what happened?! Did you get into a fight or Something? Who did this to you?!" Newt said, as he glared at the bandage. That's when Minho finally noticed it to.
"My god, you all make such a big deal out of everything around here. I just smashed my fingers with a hammer, while building, that's all," I said, annoyed. They nodded and continued eating.
"You've got to be more careful, Eve," Newt said. I glared at him, even more annoyed than I already was.
"You don't own me. You have no right telling me what to do all of the time," I hissed. Newt looked at me, surprised by my response. I had never really been mad at Newt before. Maybe it was just my annoyance with Gally, or maybe I really was mad at Newt for trying to control me. Either way, I was so done with it.
"I-I'm sorry, Eve. I didn't mean it that way. I just don't like to see you getting hurt," Newt said apologetically. I nodded.
"It's fine. I'm sorry for taking out my bad day on you, Newt," I say, my stomach growling. Minho notices.
"Aren't you going to get something to eat?" Minho asked, gulping down the last Bute of his sandwich and licking the tips of his fingers.
"Nah," I say getting up. "I'm not that hungry right now." They both nod and continue with their day as I get back to work, training as a builder. Gally said nothing to me the rest of the day. He just told another builder to keep an eye on me and make sure that I only stuck to easy tasks that I could do with my one good hand.
(Author's Note: sorry if this chapter was a little boring. I'm gonna try to spice up the next few chapters to make them more entertaining. Please comment ideas you have for the story cuz I need some ✨inspo✨. Thanks for reading!
