(⚠️TW⚠️)
Once we arrived at Newt's hut he motioned me inside. I walked inside as Newt followed, shutting the creaking door behind him.
Newt's hut was smaller than Minho's, it had an even smaller bed. It had a table covered with stacks of papers and pencils. Clothes thrown on top of what looked to be a small dresser.
"Sorry it's such a mess, I wasn't expecting visitors," Newt said, shoving the clothes inside of the dresser.
"Beats me. You're more organized than Minho will ever be," I say, walking around his hut.
"So, sleeping arrangements..." Newt starts.
"Oh, right," I say, looking over at Newt's small bed, and the small amount of space on his floor.
"I'll sleep on the floor. You can have the bed," Newt says.
"No way. I'm not letting you give up your bed for me."
"Than what do you suppose we do?" Newt asks, his eyes wandering around the room, looking for a fix.
I lay down on the bed and pat the space next to me, just like I had done with Minho.
"It's too small," Newt says.
"We'll just have to make it work, come here," I say, getting up and pulling him over to the bed.
"I don't want to make you uncomfortable," Newt says, awkwardly.
I shake my head. "Really, Newt, it's fine. Out of everyone in this glade, I feel the most comfortable when I'm with you," I say sincerely. I meant it.
Newt nods and lays down on the bed next to me. He tries to give me as much space as possible, making it so he was almost falling off the bed.
I pulled him closer to me. My head resting in the crook of his neck and our bodies side by side, practicing touching. I could feel the smile growing on Newt's face.
"Night, Newtie," I say blowing out the candle that lit the hut.
"Goodnight, darling," Newt says in a whisper, followed by a yawn.
(2 hours later)
I had been trying to sleep for the past few hours but to no use. Surprisingly, I wasn't all that tired. I was actually just really hungry. I hadn't eaten in about a day now, and that was really starting to get to me.
Beside me, Newt was fast asleep. He looked so peaceful. He looked so much younger when he slept. His face relaxed.
My stomach growled. I didn't want to wake Newt, but the aching in my stomach was beginning to get painful. I thought about the leftovers that Frypan had stashed away in the fridge. It made my mouth water. I slowly slipped out of bed and headed for the kitchen.
It was probably about 2am and everyone was asleep. The glade was silent except for the chirping crickets that sang in the night.
I slowly opened the kitchen door and lit a match. I lit a small torch that beemed light over the tiny kitchen.
I went over to the fridge and pulled out a sandwich. Three of them and some soup. I know this is a lot of food but come on, I'm literally starving. I began shoving the food down my throat.
Once I was finished I felt bloated, and I was. I thought about how my eating would affect me tomorrow. I needed to get rid of the food, or at least most of it. I threw it up in one of the glader bathrooms and flushed the food down the toilet.
Now I really was exhausted. I quickly headed back to Newt's hut.
I slipped into the bed, careful not to wake him up. I then drifted off into sleep.
The next morning, I was woken up by a nudge on my shoulder. "Eve, it's time to get up," Newt said with his thick British accent.
His morning voice was raspy and deep. I opened one eye to peak at him. It was weird seeing him like this. His hair was all messy and I could smell his morning breath.
I turned away from him, trying to go back to sleep. "It's too early. I don't want to," I say, pulling the sheets over my head.
"Minho was right, you're really not a morning person," Newt chuckled, pulling the sheets off of me. "Come on, love. You get your job today. Just get up," Newt said, whining.
"Ugh, fine," I say, sitting up. "My shirts are all dirty, can I wear one of yours until the Sloppers get them cleaned?" I ask, already knowing the answer.
"Yeah, sure. You know where they are," Newt said running his fingers through his hair, trying to make it a bit more tame.
I get up and walk over to the dresser, pulling out one of Newt's shirts. "You mind?" I ask. He nods and leaves the room, while I start changing.
When I'm finished I wait outside for Newt to change as well, then we head down to get some breakfast. I still wasn't up to eating. Just the thought of it made me want to vomit.
Newt and I sat down next to Minho, who was smiling. "Why are you so cheerful?" I ask Minho, taking a seat across from him. Newt does the same.
"Just found out your new job, that's all."
"What? Really? What is it? Am I a runner?" I ask, hopeful. Minho nods.
I wasn't actually all that surprised seeing as I did so well during the training. I was pleased. Newt however, did not see so pleased.
"It's dangerous out there, Eve," Newt says. "Just promise me you'll be careful."
"Promise," I say smiling at Newt.
"I also have some bad news," Minho starts. I look over at him, my eyebrows furrowed. "Ben thinks he's found a new entrance in the maze. So, as their keeper, I have to go with him today and check it out. That means Ren will be the one training you in the maze today," Minho finished. I nodded.
I was a bit disappointed but having Ren train me didn't seem like such a bad thing. I want to get to know him anyway, so maybe it's a good thing that he'll be training me today.
The boys went to go get breakfast while I got ready to go into the maze. I put on a ton of deodorant as it was a hot day and I knew we would be doing a lot of running. I don't want to be smelling like a dirty Shank on my first day of training.
