*Two months later*
Not a day went by where Cooper Adams wasn't practicing. At the beginning of the year it was basketball, and at the end of the year it was physical therapy. He had been out of the hospital for two months and it took a lot but he was determined to get through it. His parents didn't tell him what happened and for now he was okay with that. He couldn't remember anything that happened during the year and it was frustrating sometimes, but again, he was okay with it. His parents took off a couple of weeks to get him settled at home and would take turns alternating who stayed home with him afterwards. Miles, Parker, and Jason helped him a lot with school which he went back to finally.
There were only three weeks left of the school year and he was set to retake majority of his classes during the summer; he had decent grades the whole semester but since he was out for two months they really plummeted. A lot of his teachers were understanding and were letting him pass their class but others were more difficult and not as lenient.
It was May 8, a Tuesday, and he had to stay late for tutoring like he always did since coming back. The halls were empty and he assumed everyone either went home or were at the final lacrosse game that was being held at his school. They were playing against the private school Concordia Academy and all his friends were set to be there; he wasn't planning on going but they guilted him so after his session, he walked out to the field and saw all the stands full.
According to Parker, if Concordia were to win, they'd be crowned the school with the best athletics department but if Heights won, vice versus. What made Cooper the most upset and the reason why the stands were so full was because this was the game that would determine who the player of the year was. Apparently, it was between Cooper and this other guy who was captain of the lacrosse team. Everyone was trying to hype Cooper up about it but he didn't pay attention; he didn't see the point in celebrating something he couldn't remember. Part of him was hoping that the other guy would win so the attention wouldn't be on Cooper as much and everyone would get off his back.
When he made it to his friends he saw that the game had yet to start and the other coach was yelling out loud very angry.
"Where the fuck is River? Someone get him on the phone, now."
River. He knew that name.
"Bro that sucks, their captain hasn't shown up yet." Jason said, nudging him.
Suddenly the announcer said something to the stands, "Ladies and gentlemen, we are sorry for the delay. It seems the captain of Concordia Academy has yet to arrive. The captain is 18 year old River Brooks; he's a senior who is graduating in a week and if he hopefully shows up he just might bring his team to yet another victory. Another honor for him would be player of the year; he's currently going up against Austin Heights very own, 15 year old freshman, Cooper Adams who is in the lead by 20 points. If River wins, this would be his third consecutive win as player of the year, a great way to end his high school years. On the other hand, if he doesn't show up then the title would go to Cooper which would hopefully be the first of many. If anyone has seen River, make sure to tell him that his team is waiting for him."
Jason shook his head and continued looking at the scene the other team was putting on, "That's low of the guy; who doesn't show up to his own game?"
Cooper started getting a headache and he told the guys that he was going to head home and they tried to convince him to stay but the pain was starting to get worse. He found his dad and asked for the keys to the car, getting a talk in the the process. He wasn't supposed to drive alone but his house was only in the next neighborhood and he'd been practicing going behind the wheel since middle school so his parents didn't see a problem with it.
