Initially, I was brushing off these comments, but I've seen quite a few about this, and I'm going to be completely real with you all...I want people to read my story. I really hope this doesn't come off as rude, but I tried to explain in as much detail as possible without revealing too much.
I know what many of you are thinking: "14? I'm uncomfortable," and yes, you're right; it is weird and uncomfortable for some. In a way, you're right there with Cooper; he's probably weirded out himself, I know I would be.
In case this still isn't sitting right with you, then I will explain in further detail the number of reasons why I decided to make Cooper 14.
1) *sigh* The main reason for it all that I wasn't going to mention, but I don't want people to click out because I'm sensitive:
His age is very important and plays a significant part in this whole entire story. Not just in this book but for all the others. I would never randomly make a freshman 14 without there being a reason unless there wasn't one, but of course, there is one.
Okay, now that we've got that part down, let's talk about the side reasons.
2) I don't know if this is the case everywhere else, but, majority of freshmen are 14. There are a few who who were born after the cutoff date so they're 15 and had to wait a whole year, freshmen are usually 14-15.
3) The reason for your concerns (or so I'm guessing):
I know it's super sketchy and weird that River is talking to a freshman and acting the way he is but this is another thing that is strangely common in high schools.
Now, I don't know if this is because I went to a small school, but it was perfectly normal to talk to seniors. As a freshman, I even had friends who dated seniors, smoked with them, partied with them, etc. Seniors acted as role models for the underclassmen; heck, it was even a thing where seniors were freshman's big brothers and sisters. It was encouraged, in other words.
Now, were there some that were weird? uh yea, of course, and I'm going to make this story as realistic as I can. Again, River goes to a private school which tend to have smaller classes and be closer to each other where as Cooper goes to a public school which have twice the amount of students. Does this make sense?
Coach James introduces River as someone Cooper could learn from, and maybe he will; you just have to keep reading to find out. This story is about Cooper growing up and being influenced by everyone around him and everyone he meets.
Anyways, I hope this kind of cleared the air for anyone who might have been wondering. If it still bothers you, then...I don't know, but I suggest reading the book. If you're still uncomfortable after that, then I appreciate you reading as far as you did.
I have added tags in the description that warns people if they are uncomfortable with it to clear the air, but this story does have the mature rating, so I don't if anyone will notice it before that.
I really hope you all continue to read because I'm enjoying this and I'm excited for you all to read and get to know these characters.
