There's been a drastic change to Nodoka's mom. It was weird.
But it was nice.
Nodoka came to the hospital after a long day. Her mother will be released in 3 days time. A relief, she can't wait for her mother to get back on her legs.
"Where'd you get all the money from?" was what Nodoka's mother first said the moment she walked into the room.
"Uh…"
"Did you do anything illegal?" she asks, her blue eyes unreadable. "Drug dealing?"
"N-no! I'd never!" Nodoka answers, taken aback. "I'd never do such a thing." she sighs, dropping her bag on the floor and placing the fruits she bought on the table. Her mom didn't like hospital food. "I used my savings for college."
Everything becomes still and silent in the room. Nodoka's mother swallows the lump in her throat and looks at her daughter who was currently slicing the apple she had in hand. She notices a healing bruise on her arm. A bruise that she had caused.
And now she wonders why Nodoka's still here for her. Even wasting her own college funds for her damned liver that she, sure as hell, deserved. She had been a terrible, terrible mother and to think that Nodoka would even cut fruits for her was beyond her. It made no sense.
"Why would you?" Nodoka looks up at her mother and simply shrugs.
"I needed you more than any university in the world, mom." she says, placing the bowl of fruits on the table beside her.
Nodoka's mother remains quiet and a sense of remorse washes over her entire system, "but if you just left me to die-"
"Then I'd have nothing left." Nodoka interrupts.
"I still don't understand-"
"Yes, you've been a little… harsh sometimes but that's besides the point. I lost papa, I lost Akita - I can't afford to lose you. You're the only one I have left and I believe that you're still there, drowning in an ocean of alcohol that caused you to act that way towards me. I didn't want you gone. I want you back."
Her daughter's words strike a chord somewhere around her heart and the more she regrets how she's been treating her. There's still feeling swarming in her chest and at the pit of her stomach, and for the first time, it wasn't the alcohol that was causing her to be this way.
"I'm sorry." she says.
"What?" Nodoka asks, her breath shaking. She could've sworn that her heart stopped for a moment there.
"I should've been there for you. We were… we were one and the same. We both lost two important men in our lives and I was - it was so foolish of me to be reckless and think that I was the only victim but you were there too, hurting the same way as me. And instead of making you feel better, I had to make you feel worse. I had to take out all of my anger on you. I made everything worse when we could've just went through it together." Nodoka's mother stops for a moment before shedding a tear. "I… I'm so sorry." she cries.
Nodoka cries too.
They both cried.
And relived the bond they once had.
The greatest part was knowing that it was only the first of many more to come.
