I wake up with a start, aware of something in the room before I even see it. Ariadne and Viktor are curled up on their pallets, sound asleep. And for half a moment, I think I just had a bad dream. My eyes rove the room as I settle back down.

Then I see it.

A dark shape. Not at all unlike a shadow. Hunched innocently at the foot of our pallets. I wouldn't see it at all, except I hear its ragged breathing and then discern the dark pile of rags that slowly shifts, so that an ugly, twisted head appears. Gaping dark pits where eyes should be, and flaking pale skin. Dark stringy hair shields the horrible face and gaping mouth, unable to close for the yellow pointed teeth.

I slide my hand slowly into my backpack, feeling for the knife.

The monster hisses and reaches for me with clawed fingers. The horrible hands close over my throat just as I draw my dagger, slashing wildly through the monster's chest. It hisses then disappears into smoke.

I breath heavily, feeling my throat for injury. Nothing. And the knife is tight in my hand. But it's as though nothing was ever there. I sit up hugging my knees. That had to have been a dream. Had to have been.
