Thief
"I think----I think---I think it's---it's time," I say, slipping my hand in that of the lonely woman. She's standing on the rocks, underneath the tall tower. She's looking at the broken body of a boy. His eyes are closed and I swear he's smiling. But his body is all mashed up and broken. He jumped to fall to his death rather than face a slower death up there.
"I can't leave my baby," she says, quietly, then she looks down at me.
"You've---you've---you've been ---been here—a long—long time," I say, holding her hand, "It's-time—time now."
"You're so little," she says quietly, "I remember when my boy was that little."
"Come---come---with me?" I ask, gently.
"I miss him," she says.
I tug us away, down into the dark.
"Ah it's been a busy night—get in love," Charon says, un-phased. I hand him a coin.
"I still don't want to go," she says, quietly, "What if he---?"
"It's time," I say, placing my hands in hers, "T-t---t-time."
"Thank you," she says, softly, looking around, "I didn't want to come here."
"You'll be all right," Charon helps her into the skiff, "Come on then. Maybe you've got someone waiting for you."
I smile at her a little. It is time to go home, isn't it?
