It had been a week since Nagito had fallen into Hajime's backyard. Jane had checked his healing a couple of times and was astounded by how fast he was healing. Nagito had assured her it wasn't a big deal, he just healed faster than normal humans. Jane and Hajime had been incredibly kind to Nagito. They allowed him to sleep in a nice warm bed, he got three meals a day, and they each visited him often. The best part was, Hajime brought him unlimited books.

Nagito loved reading. It was one of the very few, no, the only good thing that came from the School. That was where he learned how to read. Sure they forced him to learn how to read so they could study his brain waves when he was reading and made him read some painfully boring books, but the majority of his knowledge of the real world came from the books he read at the School.

Nagito had just finished the book Hajime had currently given him. It was called Lord of the Rings. Hajime claimed it was one of his favorite book series and Nagito didn't blame him. Nagito became sad when he finished it. It was the last time he would get to read a book Hajime had given him.

As soon as Nagito finished the book, Jane popped her head into the room. She gave him a warm smile. "Hey, Nagito. How's your book?"

"Just finished it."

"Wow! You read pretty fast. Just goes to show how smart you are." Nagito blushed at the praise. "Anyway, I have to leave. I just got an emergency call from a family with a dog that can't get the dog here, so I have to go to their house. Hajime will be back from school in about ten minutes, so can you hang tight until then?" Jane was leaving him? Hajime wasn't home? This was the perfect opportunity.

"Yeah, I'll be fine. Thanks for the heads up, Jane."

"Anytime! Stay safe. See you later!" Jane twittered as she left and shut the door behind her. Nagito waited until he heard her drive away before he took a deep breath, flung all the blankets and bedsheets off of him, and swung his legs over the side of the bed. It was time to leave.

This was too good to last. Nagito had grown to love this new family of his, and he could see they were getting attached to him as well, especially Hajime. Every time Hajime came home from school he would run downstairs and talk to Nagito. Hajime and Nagito would chat for hours on end, mostly Hajime explaining real-world stuff Nagito didn't pick up in books. Hajimewould occasionally ask about Nagito and where he came from, but Nagito would easily evade these questions. But during every conversation with Hajime, every bite of the delicious food that Jane made, through every painless hour (well, more painless than when he was at the School), he knew, in the very back of his mind, this was too good to last.

The microchip was still in his arm. They had given him some nasty shocks when he fled the School that probably messed with the chip, otherwise, they would have found him already. But it was only a matter of time before they got the chip working again and found him. They would take him away and also kill Hajime and Jane just for knowing about his existence. That couldn't happen. Jane and Hajime were precious people, ones not found every day. Nagito had to make sure they lived. They couldn't die just because they knew about him. So, he would leave. He would leave this good life behind forever. It's not like he wanted to, he had spent a long time thinking about it, trying to convince himself not to. But the answer was clear. If he stayed, Jane and Hajime would die. And his comfort and want, no, need to stay with Jane and Hajime was not worth that. So, with a heavy heart, he heaved himself out of the bed.

He tested how much weight he could put on his bad leg and concluded that he couldn't put a lot of weight on it. But he could put just enough to hobble outside. Hajime had taken Nagito outside once before, and Nagito knew there was a door to the outside close to this room that he could walk out of. When Nagito took his first few steps to the outside a burning pain shoot up his legs. Nagito staggered and almost fell over but he caught himself on the bedpost. He had an okay pain tolerance, so he just sucked a breath through his teeth and limped out of the bedroom.
