Hajime couldn't believe how quickly Nagito was healing. It had only been three days and already his wing was looking better, and his leg was almost fully healed. Hajime couldn't wait until Nagito could fly again. Nagito had promised that Hajime could watch him fly when he got better, so Hajime was excited.
Currently, it was Saturday, and Hajime was downstairs with Nagito asking about how his flight worked exactly. How could he just take off into the air and fly? "Well for starters, you need a set of wings," Nagito said. Hajime jokingly rolled his eyes. That part was obvious. "Then you need to crouch down and spring yourself into the air. Beat your wings a couple of times to really get you going. The rest of flying is just, catching the wind. The wind takes you, and you steer with your wings."
Hajime stared at Nagito in awe. Was it really just that simple? "Did you have to practice to get good or does flying just come naturally?"
"A bit of both," Nagito said simply. "It definitely wasn't easy at first. But after a bit of practice, I got the hang of it quickly."
"Ah, I see. How do you get faster?" Hajime wanted Nagito to keep talking, to never stop. Hajime could listen to Nagito talk forever.
"Oh, that's really easy. You either beat your wings harder or you quickly fold your wings and start heading-" Ding Dong! The doorbell rang.
"Hajime! Could you get that?" Hajime's mom called from another room. It was probably another person needing veterinary help with their pets or something. Hajime sighed, hating that he had to leave. Nagito looked a bit nervous. He was always nervous when the doorbell rang. He was convinced it was someone looking for him. How paranoid could he be?
"I'll be right back," Hajime reassured Nagito. "It's probably another pet patient." Nagito nodded. Hajime stood up and ran up the stairs, two at a time. He wanted to get this over with so he could go back to chatting with Nagito. Hajime threw open the front door. He was surprised by who was standing there. Instead of an old lady towing 15 cats for their usual check-up, it was a policeman.
The policeman dipped his head to Hajime. "Hello, young man." The cop said. "Are your parents home?" Hajime was confused. Why would a cop be here? What did he have to do with Hajime's mom? Hajime nodded and ran downstairs. He reported to his mother who was at the door. She looked concerned as well. Clearly, neither of them had any idea why a policeman was there.
They walked back to the door. Hajime noticed the policeman was quite pale, and he could see white hair poking out from underneath his hat. It reminded Hajime of Nagito. A shiver ran up Hajime's spine. There was something unsettling about this man. Could he possibly be related to Nagito?
"Thank you for your time." The policeman started. "About a week and a half ago, a seventeen-year-old boy ran away from home. We've been looking for him nonstop and have concluded that he must be in this area somewhere. We've been asking everyone around if they've seen him." A seventeen-year-old runaway? Hajime had heard of runaways but he didn't think policemen went door to door asking about them.
"Oh my, that's awful!" Hajime's mother said.
"Indeed." The cop nodded. "His family is deathly worried about him. They say they have no idea why he ran away." Then the cop pulled a photo out of his pocket. "This is what he looks like." And handed over the photo. Hajime tried to conceal his surprise. It was a photo of Nagito. Nagito's fluffy white hair, his pale skin, his grey-green eyes, it was all there. Thoughts reeled in Hajime's mind. What was this? What did it mean? Was Nagito actually a runaway seeking refuge? It made sense since Nagito refused to talk about his past life. But if it was true, where did the wings come in?
Hajime's mother grabbed the photo and studied it. "Hmm... I don't believe I've seen him around." His mother said simply. How could she lie so easily? The cop turned towards Hajime. "What about you young man?" He asked. Hajime just shook his head, because if he said anything, his nerves definitely would have shown themselves in his voice, and the cop would know he had something to do with Nagito.
