It was Hajime's voice. It was Hajime's voice. Nagito couldn't believe it. How? He was dead! This couldn't be real, it was just some sick joke the doctors were playing on him. But the voice kept calling for Nagito, tugging on his heartstrings until he gave in. "I- I'm here!" He called, straining his neck so he could attempt to see. "Down here!"
"Nagito!" Nagito heard a pounding of eager footsteps until he saw Hajime's shoes standing in front of his cage. Nagito's heart was pounding and his eyes threatened to spew tears as Hajime leaned down and unlocked the latch. Nagito wiggled his way out of the cage and looked up to see Jane and Hajime, both standing there, very much alive, smiling down at him.
"J-Jane! H-Hajime! Y-You're alive!" Nagito choked. Hajime and Jane helped him to his feet and wrapped him in the most suffocating hug ever.
"Of course we're alive," Jane murmured, gently rubbing Nagito's back. "What made you think otherwise?"
"Truman t-told me you guys d-died," Nagito stuttered, trying to fend against the upcoming waterfall. But once he looked into Hajime's eyes again, for the first time in a week, the dam broke. Nagito started sobbing. He was so, so grateful to see them. To be with his family again.
"It takes a bit more than a bomb to kill us," Hajime laughed. The School had tried to blow them up with a bomb? Nagito pushed the thought out of his mind. Hajime and Jane were here now, and they weren't going anywhere. Before Nagito could really think about what he was doing, he quickly pecked Hajime on the cheek. Hajime looked surprised but happy.
"I missed you both so much," Nagito smiled. He could taste the salty tears in his mouth, but he couldn't care any less.
"We missed you too," Hajime responded. Nagito saw that Hajime and Jane were crying as well. He forced himself to pull away and wiped at his eyes. "Sorry... I'm making you all cry," he laughed.
"Why are you chained up?" Hajime asked, pointing to Nagito's shackles.
"Oh, these? The doctors don't trust me anymore, so they stuck these on me," Nagito tried to laugh it off.
"We can't have that can we," Jane said, then pulled a bobby pin out of her hair and started picking at the locks on the chains.
"Mom, you don't know how to-" Hajime started to say before suddenly the cuffs around Nagito's wrists unlocked. Both the boys stared in awe as Jane just looked proud. "I didn't know you could do that!" Hajime said as Jane worked on the cuffs on Nagito's ankles.
"I didn't need to unlock anything until now," Jane defended herself. Once Nagito was free he gladly shook the chains off and they fell to the ground. "Much better," Nagito breathed. Now he could actually move around.
"Ok, now how are we gonna get out of here with Nagito?" Hajime asked out loud. As Jane and Hajime discussed ways to escape, Nagito couldn't help but look down at Max's cage. She was smiling up at him but had a confused look on her face. "Who are those people?" She asked.
"They're the family I was talking about," Nagito responded.
"Oh," Max smiled, although her smile was tainted with sadness. "They look nice."
"They really are," Nagito looked happily at Hajime and Jane.
"I wish I had a family," Max dreamily said. Then Nagito realized how fortunate he was. He had escaped the School, he knew what freedom looked like, he had a family, he had eaten real food and slept in a real bed. That reminded him of his goal. To free all the children in the School. "Well... goodbye Nagito. It was nice to meet you!" Max twittered. "And I promise I won't tell the doctors where you went."
