Time passed quickly, Will and I's divorce was days away from being finalized, and to say I was relieved was an understatement. I was saddened at the thought of not having Henry around when I was home due to the custody agreement, but we worked out alternating weeks. Weekends were alternating as well but a bit more flexible depending on our schedules. Holidays were spilt as along with summers. I was proud of my little boy for adjusting to his new 'normal' better than I thought he would. I never wanted to raise Henry in the same atmosphere that Roslyn and I were raised in. Loud fights, tense dinners and tears were normal for us as kids. I wanted to do everything in my power to avoid that for Henry, and if splitting with Will was the only way to do that, so be it.
Unfortunately, the team had to be made aware of my fleeting marriage, but it went over better than I expected. Everyone was supportive. Hotch offering to have Henry spend the evenings with Jack at his aunt's place if we had late cases, knowing how hard it can be to work the job and raise a kid. I graciously accepted, Henry definitely started to enjoy all the extra time with his best friend. The entire team spent more time together, having "girls' night" happened more frequently, but somehow managed to involve Reid and Morgen... Or both, strangely enough. Rossi started hosting more dinners, and I think we all started packing on a few extra pounds due to his cooking. Thankfully, Morgen suggested he and I start running before work to keep us in shape. They all did their best to support me, and it ultimately brought us closer together. Even if it happened because of unfortunate circumstances, I'm grateful I can always rely on my team to be there for me.
Garcia however continued to harass me for weeks to call Emily. I finally did a few days before the divorce was finalized. Sitting on the steps outside of my empty house I flipped my phone in my hand anxiously. Will's already got a new place, and he had taken Henry to pick out things for his new room. I hated being in the house alone, and not being able to find anything to distract myself with I decided I should bite the bullet and give Emily a call. It was about midnight in London, half of me hoped she wouldn't answer. I was quickly proven wrong; the first ring didn't have a chance to finish before I heard the older agents voice come through the phone "JJ! Long time no talk. What's up blackbird?" The sound of her voice bought a smile to my face "Oh, you know. The usual. Kicking ass and having our asses kicked." I joked. "Well thankfully you have the kick of a doped-up mule." Emily shot back. She always had some weird comeback when I made jokes. I didn't always understand them, but they made her laugh so that was good enough for me. My voice became a little more somber deciding I should just get it out of the way "I uh, actually need to tell you something." Even through the phone I could feel the energy between us change "What is it?" She asked, her protective nature radiating from her voice. "Will and I are getting a divorce." Silence rang out for an uncomfortable amount of time "Em?" "Good for you. He was a piece of shit anyway." She finally replied.
We talked for at least an hour, most of it containing me explaining why Will and I were splitting. I had to talk her down from stealing a plane here to 'handle him' more than once. "Em, listen. I'm happy. It sucks, but I'm realizing my life is much better when I'm not trying to pretend to be perfect around him." Emily sighed "Okay, but the offer still stands. I do have access to a private jet, remember?" I laughed, she was always overly protective "I'll keep that in mind... So enough about my mess, how are you doing? How's Candice?" It hurt a little to listen to Emily gush about her girlfriend. I didn't know why I was jealous of her, I have no reason to be but something about it made my stomach turn. Candice got to spend time with Emily the way I desperately wanted, cracking jokes, being near her, doing a lot of the things we would do together. Emily had just finished telling me a story about their cat, Tiger, apparently, he likes to unroll all of their toilet paper and drag it around the apartment. I laughed "Hey Em, I know it's late over there. I should let you go." I said softly, not really wanting to end our conversation. "You're right, I should probably sleep. Candice went up to bed hours ago and she's going to start worrying if I don't get up there soon." "Wouldn't want to make the misses mad, from what you've told me you've got a girl with a fiery spirit." I joked. "It's nothing compared to you, Blackbird." She complimented. We encountered a short silence, each of us hesitating to be the first one to say goodbye. I finally took the lead, my voice shaking a little "Okay Em, goodnight." I said softly. "Goodnight JJ" I was about to hang up when I heard her start talking again "Oh! And don't think you're out of the doghouse for ignoring me for months. You better start praying I don't kick your ass the next time we meet." She threatened in a joke. I laughed, her jokes making me feel a little better "I'd like to see you try Em." I challenged "Alright, it's on... Goodnight Blackbird, love you." My heart jumped into my throat "Love you too Em." I half wondered if she meant it the same way I did.
