Chapter 17 - Rivals

Ash is going to catch a new Pokémon btw. 👀

~ 3rd Person POV ~
"Gary calm down!" Ash growled lowly
"Ash come in, he's the whole reason I came here" Gary glared
"okay look Gary, if he says something again then you have every right to yell at him" the boy sighed
"fine promise?" the auburn sighed as the boy nodded

"alright who was where first!?" a voice called
as the three turned they saw the auburn haired gym leader
"me" the purple haired trainer raised his hand answering the man's question
"okay let's get started!" the man chuckled
"my names Roark yours?" the gym leader smiled across the battlefield
"Paul" the trainer replied
"alright, well Paul this will be a 3 on 3 battle and once all 3 Pokémon are knocked out from one side the battle is over" Roark smiled
"gotcha" the trainer answered as the battle started

Once Paul got to his second round Ash and Gary stared amazed as he was getting through his battle quickly
"Chimchar use flame wheel" the trainer called out
"Chimchar!" the Chimp Pokémon called out
"Rampardos dodge it" Roark called out as it obeyed making the Chimchar crash into rocks
"get Chimchar and use Flamethrower!" Paul called once again as the Pokémon looked weak but still obeyed

"Chimchar is tired and he doesn't even seem to realize it" the auburn blinked at the scene
"poor thing" the ravenette frowned 

Once the battle was over it came to the ravenette's turn to battle
"I won't use Pichu so can you watch him for me?" the boy smiled as Gary nodded
"of course good luck" Gary smiled and gave the boy a quick peck on his cheek making him blush as he went to the battlefield

The purple haired trainer sat down by the auburn and started watching the battle
"what are you still doing here?" Gary looked at him in the corner of his eye
"just want to see his potential he's pretty all talk you know" the trainer smiled making Gary clench his jaw

"how long has he been a trainer for?" Paul asked giving the auburn a side glance
"only a couple months" Gary replied not making eye contact and focusing on his battling boyfriend who was working with Buneary
Paul snorted at the response as Gary glared at him
"how about you?" he shot back
"1 year" he replied
"please" Gary chuckled as Paul glared at him

Once the last battle came around
Ash was stumped Roark had his Steelix going underground and tackling Eevee making him nervous
"what do I do" Ash blinked at the scene

"Ash think back to your contest!" Gary called out making the boy blink and thought about his contest remembered exactly what Gary meant: when he battles May she had her Glaceon use dog and jump in the holes to shoot icicles out of the holes
"that's it . . . " Ash whispered to himself and saw how Eevee was still jumping away from Steelix's grasp
"E-Eevee! Jump in the hole!" Ash called out as Eevee nodded and jumped into the hole

"Okay! Use swift!" Ash calle four as Eevee did just that surrounding Steelix with many stars making him literally see stars
"okay! Shadow Ball!" Ash said confidently as Roark bit his lip
"Steelix Iron Tail!" he called out
"alright now double team!" Ash shot back
Steelix was confused and Ash calle four his last attack
"Tackle!" he called out as Eevee knocked the Steelix down

"you did amazing, here's your Coal Badge!" Roark smiled as the boy also smiled
"thanks!" he put it in his badge case
"look Gary!" he ran to the auburn who smiled
"you did amazing I'm proud" he hugged him tightly

"I gotta go" Paul murmured and left the gym as the couple said their goodbyes and then left
"babe I think I should go–" Gary started until the boy cut him off
"wait what is that?" he said after hearing voices coming from behind the building

"you're out of here!" Paul yelled at the Chimp Pokémon
"Chim?!?" the Chimchar had tears in his eyes
the boy blinked out of sadness as the auburn just watched
"you don't try at all I'm done!" Paul said as he started to walk off

"n-no" the ravenette shook his head and ran towards the Chimchar seeing how it started to walk away
"Ash?" Gary followed
"Chimchar, come along with me!" Ash called out as Pichu jumped out of his arms and smiled at the Chimchar
"Chim?" the Chimp Pokémon blinked
"come on, I'm serious" the boy bend down in from of him extending a hand to him as his other Pokémon got out of their Pokèballs and chimed trying to encourage the Chimchar to come along with their trainer

"pathetic trainer and his pathetic Pokémon" the purple haired trainer rolled his eyes
"the only pathetic one is you, a real pathetic trainer is one who just craves power and who doesn't care one bit about their Pokémon, it's a trainer who only cares about themself only" Ash got up with his fists clenched as his Pokémon glared at the trainer who just kept his side glance
"Chimchar has potential and I'm going to help him become strong, stronger than you'll ever guess and I promise we'll defeat you in the Sinnoh League!" Ash retorted as his Pokémon looked cheered in determination

"now Chimchar, what do you say?" the boy smiled at the Pokémon who blinked
"I promise I won't pressure you, you'll have an amazing time with us we'll travel, laugh and learn with each other right guys?!?" he turned to his Pokémon who cheered
"he's right you know" Gary smiled at the Chimchar who blinked
"here I'll let you decide" Ash got up and threw a Pokéball in the air

"Chimchar!" the Chimp Pokémon cheered and hit the button on the Pokéball and got in
after a couple bit of wiggling he eventually settled in making Ash smile brightly
"Chimchar is mine!" Ash cheered and embraced the Pokéball and then smiled once more
"Chimchar come out!!" he cheered as Chimchar came happily out fo his ball
"Chim!" he smiled brightly

"Ai!" Aipom smiled at him and gave him a banana as the Chimchar smiled with a bow of appreciation, as they all's as the purple haired trainer leave making Ash scowl still very angry with him, but turned to Chimchar

"I promise we'll make him regret leaving an amazing Pokémon like you" he smiled as the Chimchar came into his arms hugging him

and with that Ash was now more determined as ever to prove what he considers his rival wrong.
