Chapter Two:
Kellin trudged his way home through the rain, shivering at the cold chill running through the air.
He had bruises all over his face and ribs from the beating he had gotten earlier from a group of guys, but it wasn't anything he wasn't used to. He assumed it was Vic who asked them to beat him up.
When he got home he noticed that his father's car was gone, as usual, while his mother's yellow Volkswagen sat in the driveway untouched and alone. She rarely used it these days, she was always either home or with Kellin's father.
Kellin knew that his parent's marriage was falling apart, but he never acted as though he noticed and even went out of his way to pretend that it wasn't. He just didn't want to admit that sooner or later, they'd get a divorce. It was blatantly obvious yet he decided to avoid the topic.
Walking into his house, he yelled out to his mother to let her know that he'd gotten home. Not that she'd care, she never even spoke to him really. Unless it was a special occasion, like a company party or something.
He realized that he wasn't going to get a reply from his mother, unfortunately, and decided to head up to his room.
With a heavy sigh, he climbed the stairs to his room and shut the door quietly. Dumping his school bag out on his bed, he let out a groan of frustration.
He didn't expect to have this much homework his senior year! Although, maybe it was due to the fact that he was taking all Advanced classes and even skipped a grade. He didn't even like school honestly, he just wanted to graduate as soon as possible.
He started on his calculus homework first and then moved on to his research project in Government.
'God, could this day get any duller?' he thought to himself.
He secretly craved some form of excitement, but he wasn't exactly the 'adventurous' type. He finally finished his government research and realized that the only thing left...was his music project.
He bit his lip, frowning as he contemplated his options.
Vic never gave him his number...although he could probably get a hold of it due to his many connections around the city. Sometimes having two of the most powerful people in his town as parents was pretty useful.
Kellin picked up his phone and dialed one of his parent's friends, Daniel, who worked with the records in the town.
"Hello?" he answered gruffly.
"Hey, Daniel, its Kellin."
There was laughter on the other end of the phone before Daniel answered.
"Kellin! My man, how've you been? Those assholes still giving you trouble? You know I could come up there and set them straight."
Kellin smiled to himself. Daniel was like a brother to him, he always knew that if he was in trouble or needed someone he could come to him.
"That's not necessary, although I will keep it in mind. I'm calling to see if you can get me Vic Fuentes' number? I need to talk to him about a school project."
"Sure thing, Kells! Just give me one moment."
Kellin heard him shuffling around for a few minutes before he was back on the line.
"Still there?" he asked.
"Yeah, I'm here." Kellin answered.
"Alright, his number is 940-336-7412. Good luck on the project, kid! Stay outta' trouble."
"I will, thanks again Dan."
Kellin hung up and dialed Vic's number into his phone, his stomach twisting in knots. He's had the biggest crush on this boy for years, and now he was being forced to work on a project with him in a class he loathed. It was a bitter-sweet moment for him.
"Hello?" Vic answered, sounding slightly cheerful.
Weird, Kellin wouldn't have pegged him for the 'cheerful' type. He shakily answered, feeling his stomach twist up yet again.
"I-Is this Vic?"
"Who's asking?" he asked rudely, his tone suddenly changing from happy to hostile.
Kellin cleared his throat, trying to act more confident.
"Kellin, Kellin Quinn. We're supposed to work-"
"Don't ever call my number again." Vic growled.
He cut the call and the line went dead. Kellin sighed and set down the phone, plopping back onto his bed with a frustrated groan.
Sometimes being an invisible loser really sucked.
