Chapter Twenty-Seven:

I stood at the beach, tapping my foot as I looked at my watch boredly. I told him to meet me here twenty minutes ago. He's late...of course. The only reason I haven't left is because I really need to talk to him.

"Hey."

I turned and saw Vic standing there, smiling. I gave him a small smile in return, but it wasn't much.

"Hi..." I said quietly.

He stuffed his hands in his pockets and looked around. This was the first time I'd really had a chance to get a good look at him. He looked like he was doing fine but...I could tell by the bags under his eyes that he wasn't okay. And his eyes looked so...dull. They weren't the same bright brown that I was used to.

"How've you been?" I asked politely.

He shrugged.

"I've been good I guess...how about you?" He lied.

"I've been...alright." I said, the awkward silence resuming.

"So-"

"Look, let's get to why we're really here." I said suddenly, interrupting Vic.

Vic sighed and looked out at the waves, then down at his shoes.

"Guess we're done pretending everything's alright..." He mumbled.

I frowned.

"I don't want to pretend everything's alright, Vic. Because everything is not alright. And you and I both know that."

"Why'd you want to meet?" He asked quietly.

"I...I want to give you a chance to explain yourself. It won't change anything, but...I need closure."

Vic nodded.

"Okay well...where do you want me to start?" He asked.

"How about you tell me why you did it?"

"I didn't do it to hurt you, Kellin. Despite what you may think. When I took the bet, I was thinking of my reputation. Besides, the bet wasn't about making you fall for me, it was about me seeing if I fell for you or not."

"You still lied and you still manipulated my feelings." I said coolly.

"Kellin-"

"Okay, fine. Tell me that- not once -did you think of dating me and dumping me right after, just so you would win the bet?"

Vic frowned and looked away.

"Exactly."

"Fine, Kells. Whatever." He snapped.

"Hey, don't get pissy with me, you as.shole! I didn't do anything to you. I'm just here to figure out why you did this. I already told you that what you said wouldn't change a thing. So get over yourself." I snapped back.

He shook his head and crossed his arms over his chest.

"Fine. I took the bet for a stupid fuc.king reason, I caught feelings for you, and I nearly ripped myself apart whilst debating on telling you. I almost told you that Monday, but someone beat me to it. I should have told you sooner and, yeah, I shouldn't have taken the bet, but I can't change it."

I nodded.

"Okay..."

"Okay?" He said.

(A/N: If you make a 'Fault in Our Stars' reference, I will fuc.king murder you.)

"What else do you want me to say, Vic?" I scoffed.

"I just...what can I do to make this up to you? I...I don't want you to keep shutting me out."

I shook my head.

"I can't be your friend, Vic. I don't even want to be around you. You have no idea what it took to get me to finally talk to you about all of this."

He scoffed.

"I don't see why. You seem to be doing perfectly fine. Are you sure that I'm the one who was 'lying' about loving you?" He snapped.

My jaw dropped. Did he really just...?

Without a second thought, I pulled my fist back and brought it into his nose. He yelled in pain and stumbled back, blood dripping between his fingers.

"How. Fuc.king. Dare you. You know that I loved you, hell, I still fuc.king do! You can't tell that I'm NOT fine, because I've been hiding it. I've always hid my feelings. How do you think I was so dam.n good at being invisible for all those years? Do you know when the last time I had a good night's sleep was? Or a full meal? Neither do I! And you of all people should know what it's like to fake 'being fine' considering you've been doing it since we broke up."

Vic looked away guiltily and I softened

"You think I don't notice the bags under your eyes? Or the dullness in your eyes when you smile? You aren't doing 'well', Vic. I can tell. Like I said, I've been acting fine all of my life when I'm really a giant mess." I said softly.

"You're the one who made me a mess..." He mumbled, his voice cracking slightly.

I stepped forward and cupped his cheek in my hand, making him look at me. I frowned at the blood around his nose and wiped it away gently, biting my lip.

"You aren't exactly innocent in this either, you know." I whispered.

"I know..."

I leaned forward and was about to brush my lips over his, but I stopped myself and pulled back quickly.

"No. No, this doesn't change anything." I said quickly.

"Kellin, please. We don't have to be miserable anymore..." He pleaded.

"I can't, Vic...I can't let you in again. I won't let myself!" I said, tears spilling over and falling down my cheeks.

He reached for me but I jerked back, wiping my eyes.

"Bye, Vic."

He didn't say anything as I walked away, wrapping my arms around myself.

But despite what I said, there was nothing I wanted more than to run back to him and beg for him to take me back.
