The majority of our walk was in silence. We were both people watching as walked along the dimly lit sidewalk in the night.
"This is me." Y/n pointed at her building.
"Woah. That was quick. You really meant that you lived close by."
"Yeah. Ummm... thanks for walking me back though. Goodnight." She began taking the steps up to her.
I didn't have much time to contemplate. "Y/n?"
"Yeah?"
"I think you might be my distraction," I looked down at my feet.
She took a laboured breath. "That's not a good idea."
"I think it might be too late for that."
Y/n turned away and pushed open the door to her building. "Find something else Spencer." Then she disappeared inside.
That didn't go exactly how I had envisioned.
I ambled back to the bar, where the team still seemed to be reeling from what they had witnessed. I ignored their inquisitive stares as I plonked back down in my seat.
"Library girl really made an impression," Emily cheered.
"Her name's Y/n," I mumbled.
They noticed my sombre demeanour and decided to lay off.
Derek eventually asked me to help him get more drinks for the table. "What's up, kid."
"Nothing." I trudged behind him.
"There is obviously something."
"Just drop it, Morgan." I was getting agitated by his hounding.
"Reid, I made this mistake once before of ignoring what was right under my nose. I'm not going to do that again."
Concern was written over Derek's face. He wasn't going to let it go.
"Okay... I need some hypothetical advice." I rubbed my forehead and leaned against the bar.
"Now we're talking," Derek clapped his hands together.
"Hypothetically..." I emphasised. "Say someone really helped me out. Essentially saving my life. Do you think that if I... start feeling... something towards that person, it's just me projecting?"
"What do you think?" Derek suggested.
Wow. That's not much help. "I don't know. That's why I'm asking you."
Derek cleared his throat. "You want to know what I think?"
It was rhetorical but I was losing patience. "Yes, that's why I'm asking."
"I think you'll regret it if you don't try."
"What if I regret it after?"
Derek shook his head. "No. Trust me. The regret of not seeing where it goes is much worse."
I pondered what Derek said. "You're right." I pushed off the bar and walked backwards towards the exit.
"Where are you going?" Derek frowned, motioning to the drink I was supposed to be helping him carry.
"You said I might regret it."
I ran out the bar and towards Y/n's building.
She didn't live far, but that didn't prevent my lungs from feeling like they were in fire by the time I stumbled up to her building. I realise that I didn't know which apartment was hers. On top of that it was Monday night and most of the apartments had lights on.
I fumbled in my pocket for my phone. I pulled it out and dialled her number.
"Hi, Y/n." I bombarded her before she could say anything.
"Hi. I was actually going to call you. Sorry about earlier. I didn't mean to be rude. I was just thinking about something else..."
I cut her off. "That's fine. Don't even worry about it. Do you have a window?"
"What?" She laughed. "Yeah... I have a window."
"Have you seen the sky tonight?" I backed up so that I could see the whole façade of the building.
"Wh... Spencer. Are you like high or something?"
"No, no, no. Honestly, I'm clean. I heard on the new that we might be able to see the super blood moon lunar eclipse tonight. I didn't want you to miss out."
"Really? Um, okay." I heard rustling in the background.
I scanned the building and then I saw her. Y/n swung back the drapes. I could see her tilting her head and scanning the sky. I took her distraction as an opportunity to slip into the building unnoticed and made my way to wear I guessed her apartment was.
"I don't see anything," she said.
"What time is it?" I stalled.
"9:48."
"Oh... It's too early. Sorry."
"Are you serious Spencer. Is this some type of prank?"
"No," I chuckled. I stepped up to her apartment and knocked on the door.
"Give me a second. Someone at the door." The padding of her footsteps could be heard through the phone and through the door.
I waited for her to open the door. Y/n smile faded when she saw me. She looked form her phone to me. "You're at my door," she announced." Y/n turned off and put it on the console table by the door.
"Yeah." I copied her motion and ended the call, shoving the phone in the inside of my suit jacket.
"Do I want to know how you found out which apartment was mine?"
I licked my lips and took a step closer to her. "No," I breathed out. I twisted a strand of her hair, that hung over her shoulder, in my fingers. Her forehead creased but she didn't move. I leaned in closer, so that she could feel the warmth of my breath on her skin. "Can I come in?"
She took a deep breath. "Right... yeah... sorry." She staggered backwards, creating an opening for me to come in.
Her apartment was different from what I expected. She gave off such cosy, bubbly and busy energy that I half expect her apartment to be covered to be a colourful, organised mess. But it was the opposite. Very neutral, calm and minimalist. Practically blank.
She noticed that I was profiling her apartment.
"What?" she asked closing the door.
"Your apartment is not what I envisioned. It's so... unruffled?"
"Makes it easier to clean."
Now that she mentioned it, I could smell the lingering bleach through the room.
We both waited in silence as I continue to pick apart the room and she stood by the door; hands clasped in front of her. I spun around and puffed air from my cheeks.
"I... er." I strode over to her, cupped her cheeks in my hands and tilted her head upwards so that her eyes met mine. Her eyes flickered from side to side, undecided on which of my eyes to settle on. I stroked my thumb over the apple of her cheek and them pressed my lips against hers. She remained still but didn't resist. I pulled back, holding her face in my hands waiting for her to protest. But she didn't.
