It was gruelling watching her toss and turn through the night.
But the realisation I came to in the silence was scary.
I was going to break my promise. I don't know how and I don't know when, but I knew I would.
As the sun rose and shone in through the gaps in the curtains, I uncomfortably shuffled in the seat. The pressure in my head was building. The blood was rushing as much as my thoughts were racing. Something wasn't right. I can't shake the feeling.
The palpitations in my chest were growing. I felt caged and contained. I couldn't hold out any longer. I jumped up from the seat and ran out, sucking as much air into my lungs when I skid to a halt outside the apartment building. That was all it took. Was it that easy for me to break my promise to Y/n?
That was the question that plagued me all day.
I rushed home to shower. The warm water didn't help. If anything the steam made my head heavier. On the train to the BAU every little sound made me wince. Luckily, it was a paperwork day and everyone was knee deep in documents. Usually, this would centre me but I couldn't do it. It was frustrating.
Derek punched my arm lightly. "What's up?" His eyebrows burrowed in concern.
"Huh.. nothing," I say rubbing my head as I reread the same line for the fifth time.
Derek kept his voice low. "Reid?"
"I'm fine Morgan. I think I'm just tired."
Derek wasn't convinced but left me alone.
I opened my draw and glanced down at the card Dr Holloway had left on my desk a few weeks ago.
"Reid, do you have the file from the case in San Diego." Hotch waited at the foot my desk. I glanced form me to the card in my hand.
I scrunched my face. "Um yes. Here somewhere I think." I began scouring the desk.
"Thanks," Hotch had his eyebrows raised at the state of my desk. "Call the number Reid." He pointed at the card that I was clutching in my hands.
"Yes Sir." I slid the card into my pocket. "Hotch," I cleared my throat. "Is it okay if I head home early today."
"I think that would be best."
I nodded gratefully, escaping the sheets of smudged paper.
Once I was outside, my feet hitting the pavement in the opposite direction I entered the number into my phone.
After a few rings, I was met by the answer machine.
