I woke up as I slammed to the ground of my bedroom. I clutched my shoulder that had cushioned the impact.

Beads of sweat trickled from my head, making my hair stick to my face.

Thank God that it was just a nightmare.

But dreams mean something.

I didn't know what this one meant, but I had to do something.

I scrambled to my feet, staggering out of my apartment, pulling my coat off the hook as I escaped into the night.

I stumbled through the street, scarcely avoiding the cars. Rainwater splashed onto my ankles as I stomped though the puddles that spilled over the tarmac.

By the time I reached Y/n's apartment I was soaked through. The soles of my shoes slipped with every step as I bound towards her door.

Pausing for a moment, I listened in through the door. But the sounds from inside didn't console me. It sounded like...

Weeping.

I slammed my hand against the door. "Y/n?" I shouted. Turning the handle. "Y/n, come on. Please open up."

I move to knock again my hand pass through catching the air.

A girl with the same eyes as Y/n peered over Aaron's shoulder. Aaron clenched his jaw. "WE have neighbours you know."

"Aaron?" The girl stepped out from behind him. She gripped her mug like it was a weapon. I had startled her. She may have eyes like Y/n but her hair, the shape of her face, her jaw, her skin. They were all different.

"It's fine Laura. I know him." Aaron turned back to me. "What do you want?"

"Y/n?" I queried trying to look around him.

At the moment, a weary eyed Y/n trudged from her room. "You guys can leave you know. I feel fine now." She hadn't notice me yet. She leaned over the couch and switched off the TV, that had been the source of the crying.

All three of us stared at her.

"Y/n, hun. I'm thinking you're not okay," Laura turned Y/n around and swept her hair back.

"Honestly, I feel much better." She melted under Laura's touch, barely able to keep herself upright.

My heart sunk. Was this because of me?

She opened her mouth to go on insisting, and she finally noticed me. She narrowed her eyes. "Spencer," she acknowledged me with a dry tone.

I pushed past Aaron caught her cheeks in my palms, my eyes darting between hers. To my relief they felt like her. Not like the empty orbs I had seen in my nightmare. I engulfed her in my arms, squeezing her.

"Can't breath," she wheezed against my chest.

"Shit sorry." I released the tension and finally felt the connection with her skin. I was alarmed at the heat that radiated from her. I held her at arm's length and pressed my hands against her forehead. "You're burning up."

"I'm fine," She shuffled back, pulling the sleeves of her hood further down and around her balled fists. "Why are you here Spencer?"

I dropped my arms and cleared my throat, wary that Aaron and Laura were stood behind me plagued with the same questions.

"I... umm... can I talk to you?" That was my best escape to his situation.

"We are talking," she reaffirmed.

I glanced back at the two pairs of eyes, the four fits, the two sets of clenched jaws that's stood mere feet away ready to attack. "Alone. I mean."

"I don't think I do this right now," fatigue engulfed her.

"I understand that Y/n but the longer we... the longer I leave it the worse it will be."

She looked up at me, but she couldn't hold it. She looked away using her cover hand to wipe the invisible sheen that coated her head from the fever. "Fine," she huffed. "I'll be fine," she reassured Laura and Aaron. "I'll call you if I'm not."

Aaron shook his head. "I'm not leaving you alone."

"She won't be alone," I interjected, waving to make my presence known. "I'll stay with her."

"She's probably better off alone than with you," he spat out under his breath.

Laura caught his forearm and gave him a gentle squeeze that didn't go unnoticed by me although she did give me a disapproving look. She travelled towards Y/N and pulled her into a hug. "Call me if you need anything. I mean anything." She kissed Y/n's cheek.

"Yeah," y/n sighed into her embrace.

Aaron had begun clambering around the apartment. "Look, this." He pointed to a small pager. "Is directly linked to my Mom's bedside pager. She is not working tonight at the hospital. You feel something even slightly wrong you hit this button. I swear to God Y/n you better hit the button."

"I will, I will."

"Promise?"

She took the pager in her hand. "I promise if I need to I will."

"Oh and for the other thing." He pushed something else into his hand that was obscured from my view.

"Aaron," she sighed in contempt.

"Y/n," mocked back sternly. "If you need it, you better use it."

"I won't," she rolled her eyes.

"Are you sure about that?" He looked me up and down, before holding the door open for Laura.

"See you around Aaron," I called out after him to make a point.

Laura stopped in the doorway and raised her eyebrows in surprise at Aaron.

"Yes, well we'll see about that," Aaron replied, disgruntled by my enthusiasm, slamming the door behind him.

I couldn't hold it in any longer. "What did he give you?" I inquisitively enquired.

Y/n paused in disbelief at me for some reason. Then she slammed the item on the table and walked towards her room.

That mother fucker!

It was a can of pepper spray.
