She did call. At last.

I barely let it ring at all. "Y/n."

"Hi..."

"Where have you been? I was so worried. Why haven't you been returning my calls? You said you were going for the weekend. It's been 5 days." I leaped forward in my seat, planting my feet firmly on the ground.

"I'm sorry," she mumbled. She sounded flat. Fatigued. Disappointed.

"Can I see you?" I pled. I was already racing across my apartment, ready to see her.

"Oh, ummm..." Did she not want to see me? I wasn't going to back down without a fight. I needed her. She stumbled over her words. She was never nervous to talk to me before. "I'm not in DC yet. It took longer than I wanted it to."

"What took longer?" Why was she being so cryptic?

She audibly pursed her lips. "I don't... umm... want to talk about it."

"Okaaaaaayyy," I drew out each syllable. I wasn't sure I was ready to let it go. "Umm... Y/n?"

"Yeah?"

"Don't, ever, go this long without talking to me again? Do you understand me?"

The line was briefly silent. "Are you okay Spencer?"

"No," I blankly responded, probably alarming her. "NO. I'm not. Not having you around, even just for a few days, made me realise how much I need you."

"Spencer I..."

I had to cut her off. I needed to finish. "Y/n what is... this?"

"I'm sorry?" she choked.

"I need to know... I need to know because I'm afraid of hurting you more than I am afraid of the hurt I already feel."

"Spencer are you drunk? What are you talking about?"

"I'm just going to ask you one question Y/n... If I need you, will you be there?"

She knew what I meant. "Spencer..."

"Just answer the question. Yes or no?"

In the background voices emerged. A short puff of air floated from her lips. "Yes," then she quickly put down the phone.
