The air is chilly but the mud ain't have a lick of frost left from the few days of sunshine that's been ever so present— since the days of ending winter.

Vincent was standing on the porch, leaning against a pillar while he sipped from a mug of pitch black coffee. Now somewhat grown and healthy no less, a fantastic feat for a kid and now it's evident as ever that his folks never did return, he mourned the first few months of them being gone but after rising from that he learned through his own trial and error, and matured.

The first few years were rough for Vincent for the simple fact that he harbored a ton of anger for his parents but also heartbroken because of how he missed them. Though he did some things he wasn't too proud of while growing up, things he did just to get him and Denzel through the days but in the midst of all that foolishness, one night he received a wake up call in the form of the law battering up his kid brother for trying to steal a horse.

They caught the fourteen year old sneaking into the stables and trying to steal a fancy fox-trotter- a real expensive one at that. Instead of throwing the rascal in jail, they threw him around and thrashed him before sending him back to his older brother.

Vincent, naturally, was a swift hand rascal, slicker than an eel swimmin' through jelly and he stayed hidden from all prying eyes - all except Denzel's, who envied his elder brother's skill.

The sight of seeing his little brother all banged up scared the crime out of Vincent's eyes. He couldn't bare it and now wants to show his little brother how a proper life should be lived, without the need to be a snake and take things you didn't work for...but he feared it was far too late to show Denzel that...or worse, it was too late to save himself from this life.

The Bellowing Beast

Valentine

The youngest rodent of the pair opens the door with a huff as it takes a bit of strength to open the old thing. He holds a book with one hand as he walks out to stand by his brother- reading the last page before closing the book. The boy wore a plain maroon shirt with suspenders holding up the ripped up work jeans
"Ya know Vin, I recon there's more to life than just readin' bout skinnin' animals and eating pineapples out the can all day"

Vincent hums with amusement
"Oh? Then the some of it then?"
Vincent looked up at his brother from the corners of his eyes and smirked
"Eh..quite sure it's got something to do with any damn thing than staying here"

Vincent knew all too well that Denzel's dreams were the same as his, a life with health, wealth, and no worries- a common dream but unfortunately not a common reality for folks like them.

The younger rodent places his thumbs under his suspenders and chuckles as he hops off of the three steps and into the soft dirt
"Wish those days would come sooner, seems like everyday we waste away here huh?"

Vincent frowned at the sound of this and decided not to respond to it but instead hurled a bit of good news towards Denzel
"I got a job at the saloon yesterday, I'll be making minimum wage now"

The multicolored eyes of the chipmunk glanced towards the other with interest- nearly dropping his book
"That's- Thats great on you Vinny, Im surprised Gavin let you after he spats at me every time I come near"

"Gavin doesn't like it because you have a knack for hanging with adults- your only fourteen, idolizing the people that get you into trouble"
Vincent spouts as he sips his coffee

"Anybody who spends the rest of their lives in a place like this, has no future. WE deserve better"
Denzel glares while Vincent argues back
"Denzel, we're not special, not everyone can be as lucky or as privileged like the other's - so count your blessings and be thankful for what you have...other's have far less"
