{As God Intended}"B-But Pa...I don't know if I can..what if we run out of food or what if he gets sick?? I won't know what to do!"
The young boy cried out with extreme worry as he held a weeping infant thrashing about in the blanket he was wrapped in as he could feel the distress in his older brother's arms. The father looked back, scratching his beard as he takes his cowboy hat off and walks over to his eldest son, hopefulness filling his gaze as he tries to ease his sons
"Three weeks Vincent, we'll return filthy rich and take you away from this god forsaken town- now you be strong, you hear?"He placed the hat on the top of his boy and glanced at the sleeping infant in his arms
"You be strong for your little brother...you don't cry for no one, don't trust these lawmen, and teach em the same...what have I always told you?"Vincent sniffed and his eyes were saddened but he tried his best to fix himself to be brave
"We walk on the world, this world doesn't walk on us""Good man"
Hector Smith smiled at his boy and pulls that hat down to cover Vincent's eyes, hugging him and Denzel warmly before breaking away to stand upThe mother called out from atop the wagon, already had said goodbyes but couldn't bare it—she was a mess of her own tears
"Mommy loves you Vincent, I promise we'll be back just keep safe!"
The father walks away and climbs up to the wagon- taking one last look at his eight year old son... who was barely able to care for himself but showed promise even if god wasn't always kind to them
"Yaaaah!"
He yells at the horses and rides off into the night. The young boy watched them leave but just as they got out of sight, it started thundering. He ran inside and locked the doors after setting his brother into the baby carriage.
He didn't know what to think but he knew he had enough food to last him for a month or more but what was he to do after that if his parents didn't return? He wanted to believe they would come back but they've never done this or said they would leave for this long...his mother promised..his father loved him. Vincent told himself that they would be back and he was overreacting to ease his rattled nerves and for the most part it kept him composed and able to move onto something else.
Vincent wipes his face of the tears that dried up and collected dirt on their way down...getting it together to set his attention on the real crybaby.
His baby brother cried loudly so suddenly that it scared him out of his own head and alerted him back into "big brother" mode"Shh shh shh, Denzel, come on don't worry, I got cha"
He stood up and reached his hand out to his little brother in order to soothe him and give him something to latch onto. The little rodent cooed softly as his hand felt the other's warmth and kept those little eyes shut as he latched on to the appendage. At this moment, it all sets in that god forbid it ever came down to just them two is this world—he'd have to step up and show Denzel the way it all works, for the sake of his baby brother, because if he lost him...he'd never forgive himself.
Vincent yawns as he grows tired and wanted to get some rest himself but didn't want to leave the boy so he goes to his room to grab a pillow and returns before Denzel could realize he was gone.
He throws it onto the floor beside the baby's bed and gets comfortable on the wooden floor, his head facing the ceiling...eventually the eight year old managed to start falling asleep after about half an hour of hearing nothing but silence.
