"You were always looking at what's around you, I remember plenty of times you wandered off the second I took my eyes off you...like you were always chasing something but I could never figure out what"
"I'm just tired ma, no big deal"
"You've been such a good help, Chan, I can take over again starting tomorrow, my legs are feeling much better"
"Don't push yourself ma, I'm perfectly fine with the work"
"Mans work is his foundation, your passions however lie elsewhere-why not chase that instead of some shit smellin' barn"
"Ma..."
"I mean it, son, your father didn't die just so you could rot in a town like this. He fought hard to prove that the only way you get what you want is if you fight hard enough for it"
"Pa died, and there's still so much corruption in the world"
"Wherever there's light, there will be shadows as well. Look honey you can't change everything, you can only change your reaction to it all....and doing nothing is the same as giving up, so your father decided to fight and he died for something he truly believed in"
"And what was that?"
"You"
The cloud mouse awakens from his slumber only to have a shiver run down his spine as he hears crows cawing in the night sky, he yawns even though he's not entirely relaxed but he soon feels adrenaline pumping throughout his body after hearing a raspy yet heavy voice
"Hey"
The low toned of voice was hushed but it still shook the white rodent to the core until he looked up to see it was only Vincent, stepping out of his tent in the early am to check on everyone. He left Chan for last since he actually had a task for him, assuming he'd be awake.
"What is it, Vinny?"
Chan asked as he gets out from under his sheets
"Nothing serious, get dressed and meet me by the trail"
Chapter 17
"Dreams of Morpheus"
January 23rd, 1909
Chan and Vincent began walking the trail out of their temporary home, with it mostly being silent with Vincent taking the time to peacefully and quietly smoke a cigarette he rolled just before taking the walk with the mouse. Though as the cherry reached its end, the chipmunk flicks it away then turns to Chan and spoke just as the smoke exits his mouth
"Last night I stood up to listen to the environment on a ride and heard some settlers talking about the town, Komodo, if it's near then you should be able to track em, hm?"
"If the tracks are still fresh then it'll be no problem"
Chan assured, letting his head hang low as he watched his feet kick the dirt as he walked
"Why didn't you ask them?"
Perking his head up to look at the chipmunk
"they ain't look too friendly"
He muttered
"So what's bothering you?"
Vincent asked as he could see Chan's uneasiness from a mile away
The mouse felt distant but it didn't stop him from telling his friend the details
"Nothing...just had a weird dream"
"Funny...so did I, what was yurs bout?"
Chan huffed as he dreaded talking about it
"Nothing much...just a talk that my ma used to give me"
"Must've been a good one if your seeing it in your dreams"
Vincent said calmly as he sees where he hitched his horse
