The moment Clarence’s eyes landed on Melody, all he wanted to do was to reach out to her. Hug her tight and tell her how much he miss her. Yet all he got was an awkward handshake and a short cold conversation as they walked towards the equipment where the trainer was leading them.

He knew about the gym because of Darren whom he pestered for weeks to call for an update on Melody. Each time he asked, his younger brother always responds saying Melody had been ignoring his calls and that he should personally be the one to call her.

‘Well if she wasn’t picking up your calls, what made you think she’ll answer mine?’ He remembered how frustrated he was despite his brother’s help.

Its been more than a month of not seeing her and he badly wanted an update. Even just small details like just to know that she’s okay, what she’s been up to, where she’s staying. Anything that would appease his now anxious mind. So the moment Darren finally talked to him about how Melody was, where she is staying, and about the gym, he breathed the greatest sigh of relief he’d ever had in his life. He immediately checked his work schedule for a nearest date to check on her neighborhood and enrolled at the same gym. Cancelling a few agendas didn’t matter at all.

His palms were sweating as he drove towards the parking lot of the gym, his eyes absorbing the sight of the building. As his heart roared and drummed like never before, just at the thought that this is where Melody had been just a week ago, or maybe even just yesterday. He pulled over and quickly get off his car, mindlessly closing the car door hard, brushing off the fact that it was newly bought merely a week ago.

During the short orientation with his assigned gym instructor he could only invest half his attention to whatever the buff man was talking about as his focus had a mind of it’s own, double checking whether he looked good in his newly bought gym clothes and making sure to look around, trying to find a specific someone. Farfetched as it is, he needs to look good just in case Melody sees him.

It would be a lie if he’d say he didn’t hope to see Melody at the gym by chance. After all, that’s precisely the reason he enrolled in the first place. What he didn’t expect is his luck that he’d meet her right away during his first session today. He was just planning to check on the place she’s been working out expecting to eventually meet her maybe after a week or two. But lo and behold! Here they are now face to face, going to do a couple’s workout nonetheless.
He made a mental note to buy something for Darren as a thanks before going home.

“Since we’ve already gone through some of the gym equipment, this program I made would focus more on the core area and could be done even at home. We’ll start with some core exercises and just basic yoga poses after.”

Even though Clarence’s eyes were on the gym instructor that goes by the name,  Josh, his focus was on his peripherals. Melody was standing just a meter away from him and even though he badly wanted to look at nothing else but her, he didn’t want to be rude to his new instructor.

“With that said, hang on, lemme grab you some weights.”

Clarence watched as the instructor walked towards the corner of the room where another set of weights were. This was his chance! He immediately turned to Melody automatically calling out her name.

“Melody.” His voice sounded urgent than he intended. And when her eyes met his, he felt a sting deep in his chest erasing all the words he’d wanted to tell her.

Waves upon waves of feelings he can’t put to words swept coherence out of him, as he just stood there, helpless, drowning in the eyes of this beautiful lady he once was with.
He could almost see how her long and thick lashes swing the moment she blinked before looking back at him again, wondering, perhaps weirded for the lack of words after he called onto her.

‘Come on speak!’ His mind urged ‘You were able to talk to her before! What are you? an inexperienced teenage boy?’
'Just tell her; 'let's talk later' or invite her to dinner! His head finally urged at him.

“Melody, I-“

Right then, the instructor came back merrily handing them the weights, unaware of the tension building.

“Okay! We’ll start with a few stretches to ease your muscles.”

Defeated, Clarence walked towards the mat opposite to Melody the moment he heard Josh’s instruction.
Deep inside he’s still engulfed by an overwhelming sensation, by the thought of finally being able to be this close to her again. It made him feel all sorts of stuffs; it made him feel warm and tingly inside, and at the same time, oh so vulnerable. It was so out of his character to say the least. It was as if he was completely under a spell, completely bewitched.

Clarence tried hard with his composure throughout the stretches, however almost lost it whenever Josh the trainer would go touch Melody as he assist her with the proper maneuvers.

“You should straighten your legs as you reach your toes, Mels.”

Clarence almost had one of his hand into a fist when the instructor held onto a spot just right above Melody’s knee. Mind you, he knew that the action were purely professional. However just the thought of having other men touch Melody irate the hell out of him. You can only imagine how much worse it felt now that he sees it right in front his eyes.

And what’s with the cheesy nickname? ‘Mels’?  What? Are they even that close?

This Josh guy hadn’t known Melody as long as he did to even be in terms of calling each other nicknames! And how dare he act as if they’re close as he teach and casually touch her?

He stopped mid track his thoughts before it went and go ballistic. He breathed slowly calming himself, knowing that he’s just overeating. He himself knew that the instructor is just doing his job. He’d seen instructors being friendly and chummy to female clients way back, it could be one of their ways to make the female clients comfortable and motivated.

Yet somehow to him, it just seems different when Melody is involved.

And it’s definitely not helping that they’re now separated.
Not being able to talk to her... Not being able to touch her... Yet constantly have her running in his mind everyday.

“Alright, let’s move on with the planks! Clarence do a high plank, and Mels, you do an elbow plank. I’ll set the timer to one minute for the first plank. Ready…”

Melody was the first to go into position and Clarence couldn’t help but stop for a second or two as he automatically stared at her figure.
Melody undeniably lost a lot of weight for such short time. His eyes uncontrollably roam quickly from her firm arms to the inward curves of her mid section down to her hips. She must have gone to great lengths on her workout to make all the slopes of her body even more enticing. Plus, the plank position didn’t help his resolve, her behind was right there in front of him making a silent yet tempting ‘come hither’ with that skin fit gym clothes of hers.
Clarence wanted to bite his lips as he assumed the position himself, taking another set of deep breaths to calm himself and focusing on the exercise.

Merely quarter a minute through the plank Josh commented on Melody’s posture yet again.

“Mels, your hips are going upward lower it a bit more.”

“O-okay, like this?” Clarence heard the strain on her voice because  of the exercise as he saw Josh walk towards Melody.

“Your body should almost be aligned while doing planks, so your hips should be lowered like this.”

Clarence turned to see Josh holding Melody by the waist as he guided her to lower her hips. This threw the last of his resolve, with his blood beginning to boil he cussed,

“Son of a-“ He stopped his tongue almost too late. And before he knew it he was already standing ready to punch the gym instructor.
