Melody felt her stomach churn at the mention of the name of the person from the other line. For some reason, she had a bad feeling about it.
Cindy.

If her memory serves her right, that’s exactly the name of Clarence’s ex. Or was it really his ‘ex’?  Well, at least that’s what he told him way back. Somehow in her head a sprout of doubt started growing, which now was nourished by the knowledge that she’s still calling him.

‘Maybe they’re still together all along.’ A dark voice whispered in her ear poking a needle into her heart.

‘No! Maybe it was just a coincidence that his workmate has the same name.’ Another voice tried calming herself down.
After all, ‘Cindy’ is a pretty common name. Right?
Before she can even confirm nor inquire, the call was already disconnected. Must the caller hang up?

Clarence came out the shower minutes after.
“D-do you have a workmate named Cindy?” She nervously asked, his phone still in her hand.
He looked confused and lost before answering. “No… Why?”

She gulped swallowing doubt and an inkling of pain as it stabbed yet again deep into her chest.
“Oh. S-someone called. Named Cindy. The call disconnected after she gave her name though…”

“And… did not tell anything? T-that must have been a prank call.”
What are the odds? Prank call? Could be? Maybe? It was an unregistered number after all. She wanted to agree. Yet the uneasiness in his tone did not escape Melody’s ears.

“Yeah. Or it must have been a wrong number that’s why they hang up. Here’s your phone. I’ll be heading to my room now. Good night.” She tried hard to give him a cheery smile, as if the doubt stabbing her was just nothing.
Despite the palpable confusion written all over Clarence’s face, he went and gave her a chaste kiss on the lips.
“Okay, babe. Good night.”

She made quick long strides, fighting back the tears that were uncontrollably threatening to escape.
Melody lied on her bed. Wondering why the heck she’s reacting this drastically over a single phone call. It wasn’t as if they were actually seeing each other.
Moreover, she has no confirmation that it was in deed ‘the Cindy’ slash, Clarence’s ex.

But oh, this gutfeel, screaming at her oh so loud. Telling her it is her! Albeit, when she asked him directly, it seemed as though he had been weirded out too.
“This is the more reason you should clarify your relationship directly to him before you let yourself be carried away, you coward.” She scolded herself dozens of times till sleep encumbered her.

Melody tried her best to set aside the thoughts despite it kept poking like that unwanted tune that kept ringing in your head, pressuring and stressing her out the whole day in class. She sat silently in Darren’s car, sighing as she texted Krizzy about their meet-up today.

‘My classes just ended. I’m already heading to the café.’

It didn’t take long for her to receive a reply from her.

‘Great! I’m also about to clock out. I’ll wait for you there.😘’

‘Thanks! I wouldn’t take long I asked Clarence’s brother to give me a lift. See you in a few. ❤️’ She typed back.

After a short friendly introduction Darren drove home leaving her and Krizzy at the café.
“Damn, the younger brother sure looks hot too.” Her best friend coquettishly smiled after ensuring that Darren was already away.

“Ohh. Don’t tell me, now you’re into younger guys?” She teased knowing too well that Krizzy has always been into older men.

“That compliment was platonic you know!” Krizzy excused, as Melody saw her friend squint at her.
