Imagine going back 1200 years in time. What would that be and look like? It is something we had all wondered at least once in our lives but humanity had yet to find a way to inquire. Well, that was what everyone thought, at this point in time. My father was an advanced scientist and he engineered a small crystal that could take you places beyond your beliefs. It could take you to different planets, different galaxies, different time-periods. But of course, there was one problem. Actually, not just one, more like several. One of the many complications was that it could not be used as itself. It could only be used if it were to be surgically placed into a person's heart and the chance of that succeeding was the chance of one in a billion. This sounded absolutely outrageous, impossible even, or so it seemed. Thankfully, my father had a close colleague who was a surgeon and he was able to surgically place the crystal into my heart.

I was the lucky success of this project and I possessed the unknown powers of time travel and teleportation. It had taken a long five years of recovery and training before I could then test out the unknown abilities and capacity of the crystal. I had learned some about this power but what I knew was only the tip of the iceberg. The first so-called facts that I learned about my crystal were just predictions made by my father. There was so much more to learn and explore that I had yet to see through my very own eyes. During my years of recovery, things were quite difficult. The surgery had hit me hard and it took about three full years to completely recover. Once I had healed enough to do things on my own, without the aid of others, I had to start learning about what I could really do with the so-called 'Jem'. So my father and I started planning experiments. The first and only experiment we did, ended up changing my life forever.

We thought that we would start off with some simple time travel, as a test that the crystal I had would actually work. Going back a century, then forward another two. This was how these experiments would have gone but things ended up changing along the way. Before the experiment started, my father came up with a list of rules. These rules would outline the boundaries between what was possible and realistic, and what was not. The rules were written in a document, as follows:

The Jem's Statute:

Notice: This law is realistically final. If in any case, if it shall be disproven, it will be studied and rewritten accordingly. Currently, everything stated in this book of statutes has been proved to be true by the newly adopted laws of quantum physics. These laws stated should be easily recognized by the user of the Jem. This will prevent errors from happening, during the experiment. If any law is to be bent, then the said person using the Jem should return to their world and time immediately for this to be studied accordingly. Hereby stating, these are the rules and limitations of the Jem:

1) To travel through junctures and/or worlds, you must use a limb of your choice to create an oval-like portal. You shall walk through this into the location of your choosing.
2) A portal will close after the opener walks through it.
3) Rule two can be excused if the user brings along someone else. To bring somebody with you, you must hold hands with them while going through the portal.
4) Nobody but the holder of the Jem has the ability to open a portal.
5) You are able to bring people from different times to other times, without the risk of aging, but this should not be done unless an administrator gives you permission to do so.
6) If in any case, the Jem is removed from the user, it shall explode at any unfamiliar touch. If the user touches it, it shall not explode, but if any stranger were to handle it, it would self-destruct.
7) All of the user's guests must hold hands with them, the portal jumper, or else the remaining in the portal will be taken back to their associated time and/or world.

Those were the rules that I swore by for the majority of my teenage years. I was not able to bend or break them within my first trip to the past. That year, my father had been preparing me for a huge trip. I had packed several bags filled to the brim with my personal belongings, as well as the additional items he thought I would need. I should have been gone for an estimated one month but things did end up changing, quite drastically, to be frank. Now, where did I go, might you ask. Well, I accidentally traveled backward 1169 years, to the year 850. This accident drastically changed everything I thought I had ever known before.
