Chapter 39: Forced Friendship

By now, I'd spent a month living and working with the Survey Corps. It was horrendous living with those people and the summer wasn't even close to being over yet. We hadn't gone on even one expedition. This whole time I'd been stuck cleaning with Levi, listening to him bicker with everyone else. I was currently taking a break, resting in my room on my bed. There was a loud knock on the door before someone walked in. It was Levi. He entered my room and stood at the foot of my bed awkwardly. "Can I help you?" I hissed at him. He closed the door and sat beside me, near the edge of the bed. I moved, creating a bigger gap between the both of us. He was acting strange. I asked him what he wanted from me. Levi told me, "I'm apparently not allowed leaving until we have some kind of bond. We've been locked in here thanks to Hanji and Erwin. They barricaded the door from the outside."

"Why do we have to be friends?" I growled.

"I don't know, but we're stuck here until she hears what she wants to hear."

Well was even worse than being devoured by a titan. I rolled my eyes and lay back. "Well, what now?" I questioned. "Again, I don't know," he sneered.

"Whatever."

I got under my covers and said, "I'm sleeping it out. They can't keep us here forever."

He wanted to speak but words couldn't quite escape his lips. Inside, he actually did want friends, but his tough-guy reputation kept him from forming friendships. He lay back beside me, scrutinizing himself internally. Why couldn't he just make friends as normal people do? Maybe it was because people weren't worth it. If they were, they would have given him a chance, right? People say that the perfect someone will come someday but he thought that was a lie. People lie, and that's why he hated them. He just wanted to shut everyone out. They didn't care about him and he didn't care about them, he thought.

It had been about an hour since Levi and I were locked in my room by Hanji and Erwin. I had fallen asleep maybe half an hour ago. It truly was a boring day. Levi was breaking. For some reason, he just felt like he wanted to cry about all those years being spent alone. He wanted to be held close by someone who cared about him. He wanted someone to listen to him, for once. He looked to make sure I was sleeping. He whispered my name, quietly. Surprisingly, this was the first time he'd ever called me by my first name. Too bad I wasn't awake to hear it. He snuck under the covers, cautiously. He didn't know what to do.

Levi wondered if I'd wake up. I'd probably think he was a pervert for crawling under the covers with me, right? He looked at my face, analyzing it. He admired it and, quite honestly, began to find me attractive. He gently ran his fingers through my hair. Levi didn't know why he felt the way he did. Was he really dropping his guard for some stupid teenage girl? He was just going to get hurt again and he knew that. He couldn't just let himself care about someone. Fuck this, and fuck Hanji, he thought. It was all her fault. Levi lightly caressed my cheek, letting his thumb rub around and explore it. He parted my bottom lip from the top, with his thumb. He wondered why he was fighting an urge to kiss me. He was my age, doubled, but then again if love prevails then age is nothing more than a number.

Levi leaned in closer to my face, wondering what he was doing. His own body was rejecting its orders and he was terrified. His soft plush lips parted, directly over mine. He felt my faint breath on his upper lip. He wanted to stop himself, but he couldn't. Levi worried about what would happen if I told everyone about this. All of a sudden, I woke up. My eyes fluttered open and I looked at him dead in the eyes. Levi looked shocked. He thrust himself backward, falling off the bed. I sat up and looked at him. "You okay? Why'd you do that?" I asked. "Y-You didn't see?" he stammered. I had no clue what he was talking about. "See what? That you were sleeping on the bed with me? I don't care," I told him.

"Y-You don't, and you didn't see before?"

"See what?"

"N-Nothing..."

"Levi you're stuttering, that's not like you," I giggled. "Shut the hell up! It's not my fault you make me feel this way," he countered. Shit. He wasn't supposed to say that. He put his face in his palms.

"Shit. Shit. Shit."

"What? I'm sorry but how do I make you feel?" I questioned him curiously. He got up off of the ground and paced around for a bit. He made his way over to the window and stood there before he spoke.

"I feel genuine around you. I don't know what it is about you but I feel like I can't put up a guard around you. I hate it. It makes me hate you even more than I already do. Forget about this. If I hear you mentioning anything about it I won't hesitate to ruin your precious little army base life. I can do that, you know," he threatened. Levi turned around and rushed over to the door. He tried opening it but there was still a barricade stronger than him on the other side. He felt stupid. Levi bashed his hand into the door. "That's not going to do anything," I reminded him. He yelled back, "I don't care!" To be honest, it made me happy to hear that he felt like he could be genuine around me. It'd been a while since somebody talked to me as an equal. I wanted to take the opportunity to see where things would go. "Just talk to me," I said, "if you're comfortable around me then we should take advantage of it. It's a good time to talk. Get things out into the open." He stood at the door for a minute before dropping his hand.

Levi couldn't tell if I was faking some friendly conversation with him for Hanji or if I actually meant what I was saying. That's it. He could be truthful and if I was just putting on a show he could play it off as a tactic to please Hanji. "You're just going to be like everyone else. You don't care about me or my feelings. You're doing it all for a laugh," he mumbled. "Levi, I swear I wouldn't hurt anyone like that. Just come sit, tell me what's on your mind," I demanded. I sat and watched him, patiently awaiting a response.

"D-Do you promise that this stays between us?"

"Yes," I assured him. He let out a few sighs before walking over and sitting on my bed. He made no eye contact whatsoever. "I-I... I just need a friend," he explained. Levi lay down and buried his face in my blanket. I rubbed his back. At this point, he could tell it wasn't just a spectacle, and he was glad. "I'll be your friend. You know, you could have just asked," I said.
