GREY KINGSTON

it's been four days of scavenging for the saviors. we've accumulated a large stack of supplies at our front gate. it's off to the side, allowing cars in and out, but it's ready for when they show up—which should be tomorrow.

we've gone out in large groups to scavenge, taking the trainees who've been practicing all week to test their skills beyond the walls.

this morning, enid ran to find help as maggie cried out in pain. she's pale, clammy, running a low grade fever and experiencing intense pain in her lower abdomen.

"after i got out of d.c i just drove." denise tells us. "i remember seeing it right when i realized i had no idea where i was going. edison's apothecary and boutique, it's just this little gift shop in a strip mall, but if it's really an apothecary, they had drugs."

"how do you know they still got 'em?" daryl asks.

"it isn't that far, it's worth checking it out. and you guys aren't out scavenging or pulling shifts."

"we'll go." daryl nods his head, only talking about him, rosita, and i.

"i wanted to check." denise says. "i just want to help."

"how much time you spend out there?" daryl motions with his head towards the walls.

"none."

"forget it." he scoffs.

"i can ID the meds. i know how to use a machete now since carol's been teaching me. i've seen roamers up close, i'm ready."

daryl looks at rosita and i, "you good with this?"

"no!" rosita says, arms crossed over her chest and eyes bugging out.

"grey?" daryl asks.

i glance up at him only for a second before resuming my focus on the pebbles i'm kicking under my feet, "she's right, she can ID the meds. we don't know what maggie needs."

"i'll go alone if i have to." denise says.

"you'll die alone." daryl shakes his head.

"i'm asking you to make sure i don't." denise tells him. "and maggie could die without the correct meds, but what if they're out there? if we have them, then—"

"all right, all right." daryl shushes her from saying anymore. "the four of us will head out."

we sit shoulder to shoulder in the truck. it's stick-shift and daryl's ego is too big to admit he can't drive stick, so we're jerking into gears the entire length of the trip.
