GREY KINGSTON

on the high, rolling hills sits a plush tree with two stained glass windows hanging from the low branches. it exudes a quiet, untouched energy—untouched from the living, untouched from the dead.

the green blades of grass have never been painted red, the wind has never blown a scream, the stained glass has never shown a reflection of wrath; until today.

i keep the sun over my right shoulder as i run through the woods, carrying the weight of a sniper over my chest. i broke off from rick and daryl minutes ago. i'm continuing south for the trees sasha and i have been appointed to.

we raced our way to the fields after securing the last of the guns off the side of the road. eugene's warning of a herd heading our way made us hesitate for a second, but there's no turning back now. there's no calling off a war for the dead. besides, what's a herd to us anyway? after all we've seen, it's surely nothing we can't handle.

an eruption of gunfire causes my stomach to sink. i knew it was coming, but i still have to shake the flashes of an imagined, bloody scene out of my head. i keep my eyes fixated on the two trees marked with a purple tag. sasha is situated high up on one of the branches, watching through the scope of her sniper.

"can you see them all right?" i ask as i begin to climb the tree beside hers, hiking myself up further and further.

"yeah." she mutters as she concentrates on a shot.

i take it one branch at a time until i'm at the highest point that allows me to see the clearing of the field where our people and the saviors are fighting at.

i glance through the scope of my gun just in time to see a savior go down—a shot right to their chest from maggie's pistol.

"sasha, do you copy?" eugene interrupts sasha's concentration.

she's quick to grab her walkie talkie out of her coat pocket, "eugene? i'm a little busy here."

"i've been trying to reach grey, did she ever make it to your base?"

my brows furrow at his words and my eyes dart down to my walkie.

"yeah, she's here." sasha appears concerned at the way eugene is mumbling out of breath.

"good. listen, that herd is heading right for the hills you all are at right now. i thought maybe it'd miss you by a hair, but it—it's remarkable, heading right for you as if it knows."

"eugene." sasha interrupts his thoughts.

"i—i'm running to the car." he says. "i didn't think it'd be safe to stay on top of the water tower at a time like this."
