GREY KINGSTON

i try my best to be as quiet as possible as i push open the front door, but rick's head pops up from the other side of the couch.

"sorry," i whisper, closing the door behind me. "why're you down here?"

"heard you and michonne go out, couldn't fall back asleep after that." he stands up from the couch and meets me in the kitchen.

"she's still out there. she told me to head back without her." i say, placing my gun on the countertop.

he looks exhausted as he listens to me. his eyes are bloodshot from all the tears he's cried and stress he's been under these past few days.

"did you get any sleep?" i whisper.

he closes his eyes, shaking his head, "not really. they'll be here at some point today, it's been two weeks."

"they're gonna take our guns."

"yeah." his gaze is glued to my collarbones as he runs his hands over my shoulders.

"rick,"

his eyes meet mine. under my stare, i watch as his jaw clenches and tears well up in his eyes.

"glenn was there for me right at the start." his voice shakes. "and i couldn't save him."

i stand on my tippy toes to hug him, my arms thrown over his shoulders.

"we do everything they say, we give them everything we have, and we still lost people last time they were here. i'm not losing anybody else. i can't, we can't."

"daryl told me what you said that night, how you think they just want blood. i think you're right." i whisper into the crook of his neck.

he takes in a deep breath as he runs his fingertips up and down my back, "we have to get daryl back."

"we will." i pull away. "and we'll get through this—"

our heads turn toward the front of the house at the sound of loud engines.

rick goes to look out the living room window, "it's them, i can see their trucks. will you stay here with judith and carl?"

"sure." i nod.

without another word, he disappears out the front door.

as i'm running up the stairs, i'm met with carl heading down.

"what's going on?"

"it's the saviors, they're here."

"they're early." he states, jogging a few steps past me. "i thought they'd come later in the day."
